Stan Wawrinka is currently focusing on qualifying for the Italian Open, having won his opening match in Rome.
Wawrinka earned a meeting with Pablo Carreno Busta after impressively battling past Stefano Travaglia 4-6, 7-6(7-5), 6-1.
But the ATP Tour legend is also planning ahead in what is his final season in professional tennis before retiring.
Wawrinka has been busy in his final campaign, with the 41-year-old holding a 6-10 win-loss record from his 16 matches in 2026.
And his final ATP tournament has now been confirmed, with the Swiss veteran fittingly calling time on his career on home soil.
You can bring one tennis legend out of retirement. Who do you pick and why?
Stan Wawrinka to retire at Swiss Indoors Basel
It has been confirmed by the Swiss Indoors Basel website, which stated: “He would have liked to keep playing forever.
“But Basel marks the end of the line for three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka as he says goodbye to the game.”
Further comment read: “An emotional evening full of memories, surprises and magical moments from the career of the Vaud-born superstar awaits spectators.”
The Swiss Indoors Basel returns to the calendar in late October, and will undoubtedly be an emotional tournament for the home favorite and the fans in attendance.
An ATP 500 event, the Swiss Indoors Basel has been won a record 10 times by Wawrinka’s compatriot Roger Federer.
Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras have also won the tournament.

Stan Wawrinka set for final French Open appearance
Currently ranked 125th on the ATP Tour, Wawrinka is admirably still competing and chasing a first title of the season.
The veteran is already a 16-time ATP champion, with three Grand Slam titles and one runner-up finish among his stellar achievements.
Wawrinka also once climbed as high as number three in the world rankings, while he boasts a win-loss record of 588-386.
The ATP icon has often relied on wildcards this season, and that looks set to be the case for the French Open too.
It was confirmed by the Roland Garros website last month: “On the men’s side, Stan Wawrinka – champion in 2015 and finalist in 2017 – will compete in his 21st and final Roland‑Garros in 2026.
“Tournament organisers will honour him following his last match at Porte d’Auteuil.”
His fellow legend Gael Monfils is in the same situation, with the iconic Frenchman also hanging up his racket at the end of the 2026 season.
The clay-court Grand Slam gets underway later this month in Paris, where WTA star Caroline Garcia will also be honored.
