Spanish number two sends social media message as he ends season following Davis Cup snub

Team Spain will be without their number one and number two at the 2025 Davis Cup Finals in Bologna.

Captain David Ferrer received bad news on the eve of the Davis Cup when his star player, Carlos Alcaraz, withdrew due to injury.

They will also be without their number two, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who chose not to sign on as a reserve, having been left out of Ferrer’s initial squad.

As the Davis Cup gets underway, Davidovich Fokina has posted a message to social media, confirming the end of his 2025 ATP Tour season.

On X, Davidovich Fokina shared a message with his supporters, following the conclusion of his best-ever season.

“Taking a moment to appreciate the journey and this milestone – ending the season with my best ranking,” he said.

“Thanks to everyone for the support, excited for more in 2026.”

Davidovich Fokina finished 2025 ranked 14th in the world, jumping 47 places from 2024.

The 26-year-old competed at all four Grand Slams this year, winning seven matches and losing four.

He didn’t fare too well at the Masters 1000 level in 2025, but did reach one semifinal, at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

It was at the ATP 250 and ATP 500 level, however, that Davidovich Fokina took a real step forward this year.

Having only previously contested one ATP final (2022 Monte-Carlo Masters), Davidovich Fokina fought for four titles this year.

The Spaniard qualified for his first final of the year in Delray Beach, where he took on Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic.

Davidovich Fokina won the first set, but couldn’t maintain his level, as Kecmanovic secured the win in three, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Refusing to give up, Davidovich Fokina returned to another final later in the month, at the Mexican Open.

Again, he fell short, losing out to Tomas Machac in two sets.

Later in the year, Davidovich Fokina met Australia’s Alex De Minaur in the final of the Washington Open.

In a thrilling match, Davidovich Fokina looked set to clinch his maiden ATP title, but couldn’t convert any of his three match points in the capital.

Winning 5-7, 6-1, 7-6, De Minaur condemned Davidovich Fokina to another final defeat.

A fourth final defeat of the year followed in Basel, where Davidovich Fokina lost to Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca in straight sets.

The Spaniard is now 0-5 in ATP finals, and will no doubt be targeting a first-ever trophy in 2026.

Davidovich Fokina is set to return to tennis ahead of the 2026 Australian Open, which begins on Monday, January 12.
