James Blake is the tournament director of the Miami Open and he’s been explaining why the decision was made to give Simona Halep a surprise wildcard for the event.

The wait is almost over for the Romanian tennis star. After 560 days, she is ready to step back into professional tennis and prove that she still has what it takes to win major events.

It was the 2022 US Open when fans last saw Halep in action. She was later suspended after testing positive for a banned substance and hasn’t been able to play ever since.

The two-time Grand Slam champion takes on Paula Badosa tonight and she must be seriously buzzing to get back on the court and get a racquet in her hand again.

It’s been a long road back for Halep and her fans will relish the chance to see her in action. Ahead of her first match back, Blake has been discussing when it was decided that she’d receive a wildcard for the Miami Open.

Blake told the Served with Andy Roddick Podcast: “When this happened we actually had already gone through a lot of our wildcard discussions. And some of these, some years the wildcard discussions are knockdown drag outs between one agent really lobbying for their client, another agent lobbying for theirs, another with me saying no we need a young American in there, going back and forth.

“This year it wasn’t that crazy, we were going to save one woman’s wildcard because, you know what, you never know what’s going to happen. And we were so so fortunate when that happened and we left one this time.

“As soon as this happened, as soon as we saw it, I emailed the team and said ‘Guys, I haven’t got the formal request yet but the fact that she’s cleared and ready to play I have a feeling that in the next couple of hours we need to be ready for whether she’s going to ask’.

“At that point, we read the reports on it and we all kind of came to the same conclusion that we would love to welcome her back.”

What happened to Simona Halep?

Well, it’s been a long road to get to this point that is for sure. Halep won the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019 but hasn’t played since the US Open in 2022.

It was after that event that Halep tested positive for a banned substance. She was subsequently given a four-year ban from tennis but she is now back on the scene.

The 32-year-old has always protested her innocence and her defence was heard recently. Halep saw her ban reduced to just nine months, allowing her to return to tennis straight away.

She will hope that tonight goes better than the last professional match she played. In the first round of the US Open in 2022, she was dumped out by 20-year-old qualifier Daria Snigur.

In our view, Halep will be a welcomed addition back to the tour. All that remains to be seen is whether or not she can return with the same energy and drive to win the big titles that she always showcased before.
