Novak Djokovic is still competing at a very high level for a player now approaching his late thirties, but it remains to be seen if he has any more Grand Slams left in him.
The Serbian has won 24 majors, more than any other male player and he is level with Margaret Court.
But for the first time since 2017, Djokovic was not able to win a major this season and suffered defeats to his two biggest rivals on tour at that level, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Djokovic is still very motivated to win the Grand Slams, and he will do all he can to try and win one of the four biggest prizes tennis once again.
Does Colin Fleming think Novak Djokovic can still win Grand Slams?
By his standards, it was surprising that Novak Djokovic made just one Grand Slam final appearance in 2024, which came against Alcaraz in a rematch of the 2023 Wimbledon final.
He lost that match in straight sets, and also lost to Sinner in the Australian Open, and Alexei Popyrin at the US Open.
Injury cut short his chances at the French Open, but there is no denying that as Djokovic continues into the twilight of his career, the prospect of winning Grand Slams is only going to get tougher.
This is exactly the point that Sky Sports commentator Colin Fleming made during Djokovic’s dominant win over Flavio Cobolli at the Shanghai Masters.
“Where does Djokovic sit with Sinner and Alcaraz? One main point I would make on that is the tournament and the title that Djokovic wanted this year, he got it, the Olympics. When he really wants something he’s still got that capability,” Fleming said.
“Now, let’s remember that was best of three sets. Are the Slams which are best of five becoming a tighter proposition? I think so against Alcaraz and Sinner and to beat Medvedev, Zverev, to beat all these guys over best of five is harder.
“But in a tournament like this on this type of court, he’s definitely right up there at the top of the game still.”
What is Novak Djokovic’s record against Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at Grand Slams?
Of the seven matches Djokovic has contested against Alcaraz, three of them have taken place at a Grand Slam.
The first came in the 2023 French Open semi-finals. With the score locked at a set apiece, Alcaraz began to suffer from severe cramps which significantly impacted his performance. He won just two more games as Djokovic sealed a 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1 win.
The other meetings came in back-to-back Wimbledon finals. Alcaraz claimed the first over five sets in 2023, before dominating the Serbian with a 6-2 6-2 7-6(4) victory in July to defend the title.
Three of Djokovic and Sinner’s four meetings have also taken place at Grand Slams. The first two encounters came at Wimbledon with first happening in 2022.
Sinner led by two sets before Djokovic came roaring back to seal a 5-7 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory. They met at SW19 the following year and this time Djokovic prevailed in straight sets.
Their last Grand Slam contest came at the 2024 Australian Open, where Sinner handed Djokovic his first loss at the tournament since 2018, and went on to win his first major title.
