Simona Halep responds when asked if she ever plans to return to tennis as a coach

Simona Halep is enjoying her retirement right now, having called time on her stunning career earlier this year.

Halep retired aged 33 in her native Romania in February, after losing her opening match at the Transylvania Open.

She claimed a superb 24 WTA titles during her time on the court, as well as reaching number one in the world rankings.

Among her feats were two Grand Slam titles, with Halep winning the French Open and Wimbledon in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

The Romanian star also lost three Grand Slam finals, while she finished runner-up at the 2014 WTA Finals.

Simona Halep says if she might consider returning to tennis as a coach

Halep is now back at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, where she was asked on Tennis Channel if she might consider coming back to tennis to coach.

She replied: “Right now no, I’m not thinking about it. Probably in the next years. I don’t have energy to do this. This means to travel again, I just like to feel at home more time now.”

Halep was also asked about the best thing about being retired, to which she replied: “I don’t have a schedule anymore.

“I can just wake up in the morning and not have anything to do. But of course I need this rest. I had so many years working every day.

“Pressure, the tension, everything, made me a little bit to be burned out. Now I enjoy life and I enjoy the free time.”

And when asked what she misses the most, she responded: “The adrenaline I miss, winning matches, playing matches, the pressure that I had during the matches, all the work for the team, the people around.”

WTA icon Halep is taking in the action in Riyadh this week, where the WTA Finals are already well underway.

Asked who stands out from the eight players involved, she replied: “In the last few years, [Aryna] Sabalenka with [Iga] Swiatek, pretty dominant in tennis. They have confidence, extra confidence.

“Always I said that who is coming here to the WTA Finals has their own chance to win this tournament because they are the best players in the world. So they have to be confident that they have their chance.”

And when asked to pick her favorite to lift the trophy, she responded: “I’m not good at picking, just the best to win.”

Sabalenka has been drawn in the Stefanie Graf group this year, joined by Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini and defending champion Gauff.

And Swiatek is in the Serena Williams group alongside Elena Rybakina, Amanda Anisimova and Madison Keys.
