Three years ago, Serena Williams announced she would call it a day on her legendary career when she announced her retirement from tennis.

Ahead of the 2022 US Open, the 23-time Grand Slam champion revealed that she wished to ‘evolve away’ from the sport, after well over two decades on the WTA Tour.

Williams played her final match at Flushing Meadows, bowing out in the third round of the tournament she had won six times.

Since then, many fans have wished for her to return to the game, but a comeback is not on the agenda for the American legend.

Serena Williams says she will always miss her playing days

When asked on ‘The Today Show’ if she gets tired of being asked to make a return to tennis, Williams responded: “I don’t know if I get tired of it. I don’t really hear the noise. I don’t really listen to it.

“I kind of mute out everything. I have gotten really good at muting out the noise.

“I do [miss it]. I think there’s a part of me that will always miss tennis because when you do something for your entire life from the day you remember you always had a goal, and then one day you wake up and that’s not your goal anymore, and it’s a huge change.

“But at the same time, I have so many wonderful memories. I had so many great times, and I can always take solace in that.”

Serena Williams says what Venus Williams is doing is ‘remarkable’

Williams’ sister, Venus Williams, is still going on the tour at 45 years of age, and is set to return to the singles event at the US Open after featuring in the revamped mixed doubles tournament.

Serena said of her sibling’s upcoming run in New York: “I’m so excited. I’ll definitely be cheering her on and rooting her on the whole way. I’m really excited for what she is doing; it’s pretty remarkable.”

Venus played her first professional match since March 2024 at the Washington Open in July and earned a statement victory over world number 47 Peyton Stearns.

She has since appeared at the Cincinnati Open and will soon begin her 25th singles campaign in the Big Apple.
