Sam Querrey knows what it takes to reach the last four of a Grand Slam but he never quite managed to make the final.

The American player reached the semi-final at Wimbledon in 2017 beating Andy Murray before going out to Marin Cilic.

Querrey reached a career-high world number 11 and he was a player who could be extremely dangerous on his day.

When it comes to winning the game’s top prizes, Querrey never quite got there but he can still look back on a good career.

Now, he’s been discussing the current Wimbledon tournament that is ongoing and he’s been quizzed on the potential of Holger Rune.

Sam Querrey delivers verdict on Holger Rune

The Danish player crashed out of Wimbledon at the last 16 stage, losing in straight sets to Novak Djokovic.

The seven-time champion took offence to some of the fans on Centre Court cheering for Rune and produced a controversial interview afterwards.

For Rune, it was another tournament where he’s failed to really progress and he’s yet to make a semi-final of any major.

Querrey isn’t sure what the next step is for the Danish player but he has made a bold prediction about the 21-year-old.

He told NBC Sports: “For Rune, he is just on the outside looking in with a group of Alcaraz, Sinner, Djokovic, maybe even Medvedev up there and Zverev.

“It seems like he is always pushing on the door, he makes the quarter-finals, then a round of 16, then another quarter. He might final a Masters series.

“I don’t know what the missing piece is but I do know if you separate the players he is just in that tier two right now. But he’s knocking on the door, if he keeps working hard and putting himself in these positions of making quarter-finals of slams, he’s going to get through.

“I expect to see him in a final of a slam at some point during his career.”

Rune has to learn from mistakes and prove he’s capable of glory

At 21 he does have plenty of time on his side to win a major title and there is no reason to panic just yet.

Furthermore, Rune knows he can beat the top players but he’s got to start proving he can do it in the big tournaments.

Querrey was a bit of a journeyman during his career and never really managed to win one of the really big titles – although it wasn’t through a lack of trying.

Rune is a talented player and his time will come but with other talented players reaching the latter stages of tournaments, he currently has his work cut out somewhat.
