Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson argue over who is favorite to win Roland Garros out of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz continue to impress in the French capital, making their way through to the quarterfinals without too much trouble.

World number one Sinner beat Andrey Rublev in his fourth-round match 6-1, 6-3, 6-4, to secure his place in the last eight.

The Italian has yet to drop a set in Paris, easing past Arthur Rinderknech, Richard Gasquet, Jiri Lehecka, and Rublev to set up a quarterfinal tie with Alexander Bublik.

Defending champion Alcaraz has had a slightly tougher time of things, dropping a set in each of his last three matches.

The Spaniard’s fourth-round match was his trickiest so far, as his American opponent pushed him close, before Alcaraz defeated Ben Shelton 7-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

As both players prepare for their quarterfinal matches, two former ATP stars have picked who they are favoring for the title.

Sam Querrey thinks ‘perfect’ Jannik Sinner is favorite for the French Open, Steve Johnson disagrees

Speaking on the latest episode of the Nothing Major podcast, former Wimbledon semi-finalist Sam Querrey made his pick.

“[Jannik] Sinner,” said Querrey.

“It seems like he is just playing a notch above everyone else. He has barely been challenged in sets. His ball striking is perfect. There is just nobody close to him.

“If he plays like this. He was my pick to win the tournament before it started.”

Querrey even picked Sinner ahead of Alcaraz, despite the latter’s recent success against the Italian.

“I know Alcaraz has been his one kryptonite, but I honestly think that Sinner is playing a notch above every single person at the tournament right now,” he said.

Querrey’s co-host Steve Johnson weighed in, predicting who he thinks would win if Sinner and Alcaraz contested the French Open final.

“I agree with Sam [Querrey], but I ultimately think that if it’s a Carlos vs Sinner final, then Carlos has more head-to-head advantage, so I would take him slightly if they both get there,” said Johnson.

“But Sinner, I think, is playing the best tennis for sure of anyone in the draw at the moment.”

“He is playing like prime [Roger] Federer, prime [Rafael] Nadal and prime Novak [Djokovic],” added Querrey.

Former world number eight John Isner was keen to share his thoughts on the three-time Grand Slam winner.

“It is ridiculous. He is just crushing people right now,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter what the score is. He is going to go after the ball with the same intensity and hit the centre of the strings every single time.”

While many are already looking ahead to a potential Alcaraz/Sinner final at Roland Garros, the players themselves would be wise to stay in the moment, with several big obstacles still to come.

Next up for Sinner is Kazakh star Bublik, who will be competing in his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal when they take to the court on Wednesday.

He would then face off against either Alexander Zverev or Novak Djokovic in the last four, players who have enjoyed success at the French Open in years gone by.

Zverev reached last year’s final, while Djokovic has won the tournament on three occasions, doing so most recently in 2023, taking down Casper Ruud in the final.

Alcaraz will play America’s Tommy Paul in his quarterfinal match, who is currently struggling with an abdominal injury in Paris.

Frances Tiafoe or Lorenzo Musetti would await him in the semis, against both of whom he would likely be considered the favorite.

If Alcaraz and Sinner were to advance to the final, they’d face off for a 12th time on the ATP Tour.

Alcaraz has won their previous two meetings on clay, beating him in Rome last month and in the semi-finals of last year’s French Open, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

It’s tough to tell who would be considered favorite should they contest this year’s Roland Garros final, but it would most certainly be one to watch.

They’ll first focus on their quarterfinal matches; however, as Alcaraz takes on Paul on Tuesday, June 3, before Sinner plays Bublik on Wednesday, June 4.
