Holger Rune has got people talking about him again after beating Carlos Alcaraz to win the Barcelona Open.
Rune was inspired by Novak Djokovic in the Barcelona Open final, something that he admitted after winning his first title in two years.
Despite having a career-high ranking of world number four, Rune surprised Alcaraz in the final to continue his positive start to the 2025 season.
This was Rune’s second final of the year so far, enabling him to return to the top 10 in the ATP rankings.
Now there are some questions over what Rune could achieve at some of the biggest events this year including Roland Garros.

Sam Querrey and John Isner say whether they think Holger Rune can win the French Open
Two people who have been discussing Rune’s potential at the upcoming Grand Slam tournament are Sam Querrey and John Isner.
When discussing whether the Dane could win the Roland Garros title on the Nothing Major Podcast, Querrey suggested that Rune will need to show more consistency in Madrid and Rome if he is to really become a contender.
“I think he needs one more big result before I agree to that statement you just said, and can he contend at these big Masters series,” said Querrey. “Great week for him but he has lost 13 straight matches against top five players before today.
“But he did look good in Barcelona. Only dropped one set to [Sebastian] Baez early on and beating Alcaraz in the final, pretty impressive.
“But we are yet to see with anyone this year put together big results, outside of Alcaraz, really. So until Rune or someone else does that I am not going to say they are a threat to win one of the next big Masters series in Madrid or Rome.”
Former top 10 player Isner appeared to agree with Querrey and claimed that Rune is in the second tier of players behind the likes of the returning Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev.
“I would put him in tier two,” said Isner. “If tier one is Sinner, Alcaraz and Zverev. I would put him Rune maybe just behind them as far as contenders go going forward.”
How has Holger Rune performed at the French Open before?
While Querrey is hoping Rune finds more general consistency, the 21-year-old has been fairly consistent at Roland Garros, where he has reached the quarter-finals in two out of his three appearances.
On both of those occasions he lost to Casper Ruud, while last year he fell slightly short at the fourth round stage to eventual finalist Zverev.
| Year | Rune’s Result |
| 2022 | Lost in the quarter-final to Casper Ruud |
| 2023 | Lost in the quarter-final to Casper Ruud |
| 2024 | Lost in the fourth round to Alexander Zverev |
Before Rune can set his sights on Roland Garros, he will first have to turn his attention to both the Madrid and Italian Open’s.
Madrid has not been such a successful event for Rune, having only won two of his four matches at the Masters 1000 event in the Spanish capital.
While Rome has been more of a happy hunting ground for Rune, after reaching the final in 2023 before losing to Daniil Medvedev.
Rune will look to continue his momentum on from his Barcelona victory at the Madrid Open, where he will play either Fabian Marozsan or Flavio Cobolli in his opening match.
