Carlos Alcaraz has not enjoyed the return to form he would have envisioned when starting fresh this season.

However, that is not solely his own fault, with a number of injuries having inexplicably flared up this season.

With his meteoric rise to prominence over the last few years having seen him challenge some of the sport’s greatest-ever figures, naturally, expectation has grown.

But should he be suffering this early in his career, there is a potential cause for concern.

That’s what one notable name has now suggested.

Paul Annacone on Carlos Alcaraz’s injury worries

Speaking to Tennis Channel just yesterday, Paul Annacone, who has most notably enjoyed stints coaching Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, has now weighed in on Alcaraz’s recent troubles.

The Spaniard has seen his 2024 scuppered by various setbacks, and following his early exit from the Australian Open, to follow that up with an early retirement from Rio due to injury only added to the mounting pressure.

Now, having pulled out of Barcelona just a week after he failed to be fit enough for the Monte-Carlo Masters, and already the young superstar has missed three of the seven tournaments we expected him to play in this year, winning a sole title.

Annacone, unsurprising, is worried. He noted: ‘Yeah, it’s starting to get a little disconcerting. There’s plenty of time leading into the French Open. But just, whenever you see young players that start to get injured a lot, it just makes me worried a little bit.

‘And obviously this kid’s a tremendous athlete and let’s just hope that this injury gets out of him very quickly. But look, two tournaments — that’s a significant loss.’

We are being deprived of Carlos Alcaraz’s excellence

Whilst this stuttered start to the season must be supremely frustrating for Alcaraz and his team, who just seemed to have recaptured his form at Indian Wells, the spectator undeniably suffers when he is absent too.

After all, the 20-year-old superstar is not just a born winner, but also an incredibly gifted technician capable of pulling off the spectacular.

And he knows it.

In fact, often the youngster will favour a shot to get the crowd going rather than a simple winner, such is his showmanship.

When he is ruled out of a tournament, the entire competition is worse off for it.

Hopefully, these injuries do prove just to be a short, consistent bout of misfortune and nothing more serious, and in time we can get back to seeing Alcaraz on court every single week.
