Roger Federer shared his thoughts on the 2024 Laver Cup and why it gives him a bittersweet feeling.
Federer, along with his agent Tony Godsick, came up with the idea for the tournament in 2017 and over the years it has provided fans with memories and moments they will never forget.
One of those included the Swiss Maestro’s emotional retirement in 2022, following a defeat to Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock in a doubles match alongside great rival and friend Rafael Nadal.
Two years later, Roger Federer is back at the tournament which is emanating from the Uber Arena in Berlin, Germany and is excited to see Team Europe and Team World do battle once again.
What does Roger Federer find ‘bittersweet’ about the Laver Cup?
The Laver Cup brings together the best in the world who are captained and watched on by legends of the game. Federer is enjoying his life post tennis and is content watching the action from afar or in the stands.
However, the fact that Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe are set to be captains of Team Europe and World for the final time is a sad moment for the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
“For me, this week is very much around Bjorn and John. Then the trio, of course, was Rod Laver, the three legends coming together for one last week,” Federer told Eurosport.
“In the future, I hope that Bjorn and John will return and pass on the torch, you know, in a way also to Yannick [Noah] and Andre [Agassi] and that they will always be friends and guests forever as inaugural captains of the event.
“It’s very much a bittersweet week with Bjorn and John because I would love them to be captains forever.
“But at the same time, we’ve got to move with the times, and it was supposed to be three years or four, or two, and it ended up being seven, and it’s been seven great years. I couldn’t have had better captains to be honest.”

What are Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe’s records as Laver Cup captains?
Force rivals turned friends Borg and McEnroe have been the Laver Cup captains since the competition’s inception in 2017.
Borg had a sensational start as Team Europe claimed the first four events, before Team World and McEnroe fought back to win the 2022 title.
They successfully defended the crown in 2023 and the American is aiming to bow out with his third win as Team World captain.
Borg, an 11-time Grand Slam singles champion, is searching for his fifth win in charge of Team Europe and first for three years.
From the 2025 event, Andre Agassi and Yannick Noah will take over as Team World and Team Europe captain.
