Roger Federer cannot believe what some players are now choosing to do with their tennis rackets.

Throughout his career the 43-year-old used his trusted Wilson wand to bamboozle his opponents with his sheer artistry and ruthlessness on court.

He went on to capture 20 Grand Slam titles and dominate the sport throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

Now retired, the eight-time Wimbledon champion still keeps an eye on the sport and observed something that has left him perplexed.

What has surprised Roger Federer about what players are doing to their rackets?

Roger Federer made a big change to his tennis racket upon his return to tennis in 2017 following knee surgery.

He played with a bigger racket head that allowed him to hit more power, especially off the backhand side. This helped him win two more Australian Open titles and his eighth and final Wimbledon crown.

Federer also played with a heavier frame and the former World number one was taken back by how many of today’s players compete with a lighter racket.

“I think by it being lighter. The majority of players nowadays play with lighter frames,” Federer told Tennis Channel when unveiling new signature Wilson rackets.

“I was actually shocked to hear how many of the pro players actually play with lighter frames than what I was playing with. I was like what?

“I was really intrigued by that thought and I was like I have to try it there, and see if I could go as low as what the average player is playing with, or whether I was always going to be on the heavier spectrum.”

Has Roger Federer released a new racket?

Federer competed with a racket Wilson for his entire tennis career. He appeared on Tennis Channel to release a line of rackets titled The RF Collection.

The rackets came out on August 8, which is the date of Federer’s 43rd birthday. The first racket is called RF 01 Pro, which Federer had personally customised for his own use.

Secondly, the RF 01 caters to advanced adult players while younger players can use the RF 01 Future to enhance their skills.

“Having spent my whole career playing with Wilson racket, I’m excited about the new RF Collection that we’ve created together,” a press release from Federer wrote.

“I hope the collection inspires the stars of today as much as I was inspired the first time that I picked up a Wilson racket.”
