Rennae Stubbs explains what she spotted about Coco Gauff and Tommy Paul after watching them practice at Wimbledon

Rennae Stubbs shared her thoughts on the practice sessions of Coco Gauff and Tommy Paul ahead of Wimbledon.

The former doubles player had the opportunity to watch both American number one players train ahead of trying to win the grass court Grand Slam for the first time.

Gauff would become the first American woman since Serena Williams in 2016 to lift the title while Paul would end a 24-year run since the last American man clinched the crown, which was Pete Sampras back in 2000.

Both players had a strong run in their most recent grass court event and will be feeling confident ahead of the game’s most prestigious tournament. Based on her response, Stubbs seems impressed by what she saw from the duo.

Stubbs, who is a two-time Wimbledon doubles champion, is excited to watch this year’s tournament unfold.

In what is a first for quite some time, there does not seem to be a clear favourite for the title on the men’s or women’s side of the draw.

Gauff and Paul have a shot to write their names into the history books at the All-England Club, and Stubbs assessed what she gleaned from both players during practice.

“I saw her practicing today. She was on court 18, looking really relaxed and pretty happy,” Stubbs began. “I saw Tommy today. He looks super happy and super relaxed. He loves playing on the courts. 

“I love the way he has implemented this coming into the net and playing this grass court style on hard court and clay. It has to translate on grass and I think he is a real threat in this tournament.”

What are Coco Gauff and Tommy Paul’s grass court results in 2024?

Paul began the grass court season by reaching the Libema Open quarter-finals where he lost to Sebastian Korda.

He then entered the Queen’s Club championships and dropped just one set on the way to winning his first title on grass.

He was due to travel to Eastbourne to play Britain’s Billy Harris in his opening match, but due to his run to the Queen’s title he pulled out with Wimbledon on the horizon.

Gauff played just one grass court tournament in the leadup to Wimbledon. She reached the semi-finals at the Berlin Championships where she lost to eventual champion Jessica Pegula.
