Rafael Nadal’s retirement in 2024 didn’t really come as a surprise, but it was still a hugely upsetting moment.
After all, it marked the end of a sparkling career that will go down as one of the greatest of all time.
Injuries and age had naturally started slowing him down in the years leading up to that 2024 decision.
However, despite the outpouring of emotion, he has hardly been invisible in the year following.
Rafael Nadal shuts down coaching rumours
Now, speaking to AS, in an interview released on Christmas Day, Rafael Nadal has offered the latest intriguing insight into life following his retirement from the sport.
And, when asked about the potential of coaching, his answer was rather uncompromising.
Who would you like to see coach Carlos Alcaraz next?
This was made particularly interesting given Carlos Alcaraz’s recent split with Juan Carlos Ferrero, leaving a vacancy within his team.
Nadal admitted: “I’ve always had the utmost respect for what might happen in the future, because what you feel today isn’t necessarily what you’ll feel later.
“Life is constantly changing, especially when you have young children: you see life one way, a few years go by, and it changes.
“Travelling constantly? I don’t see it happening. Being a coach would require that, and right now it doesn’t fit with my life.
“Being a Davis Cup captain someday? Why not? I might enjoy it… or not. I just retired; it’s too early to think about it.
“I respect life’s processes and the need to adapt. Right now, it’s not appropriate to think about that.”
Why Rafael Nadal was recommended as a coach for Carlos Alcaraz
This latest revelation from the 39-year-old has sought to dampen rumours of a potential link-up with his friend and compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, who is now without a coach after Ferrero’s departure from the team.
Carlos Santos, who was the first coach of the six-time Grand Slam champion, was arguably the man who stoked the flames of this potential reunion just a few days ago.
He claimed: “And we’re not even talking about players like Rafa Nadal, who would be a fantastic coach for Carlitos. For his upbringing, his values, his character, his humility. That would be very beneficial for Carlos and those around him.”
Would Rafael Nadal be the undisputed GOAT if not for injuries?
Sadly, this proposition has been spurned for now.
Alcaraz is set to move ahead with Samu Lopez as his head coach.
