Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic’s rivalry is the most prolific in men’s tennis in the Open Era, and yesterday we likely saw its final iteration.

Clashing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, it was a match that brought much excitement to the tennis community, despite it always feeling like Novak Djokovic would run out victorious.

In the end, there was to be no fairytale upset, and Rafael Nadal exited the singles draw in just the second round.

He has since made a bold claim about the 37-year-old, just after Nadal fumed at journalists for once again questioning his retirement plans.

Rafael Nadal makes huge Novak Djokovic admission

Nadal was likely in no mood for talking after his disappointing exit from the singles draw, but admittedly, his defeat felt like a foregone conclusion.

After all, despite Djokovic’s faltering form in 2024, he still was far fitter than his long-time rival, who has suffered from unrelenting injury problems for many years now.

However, few would have expected the admission that Nadal would give in his post-match interview, telling MARCA: ‘I don’t have the continuous shot quality… without the shot quality or legs of 15 years ago, you’re not going to create problems for the best in history

‘One player was much better than the other and we have to accept it. For an hour it was hard to digest everything that was happening, although I did it. I tried to be with the right attitude and mentality to accept it because I knew there was a chance that the duel would go like this.

‘I was not able to play at the level I needed and he has not given me practically anything either. I did not have the continuous shot quality to create problems for him… I do not have the legs of 15 years ago. So without the ball quality and the legs of 15 years ago, you’re not going to create problems for the best in history, right?’

Is Novak Djokovic really the Greatest Of All Time?

Whilst Nadal might certainly now think so, and plenty of other high-profile players and pundits have made the claim before, Djokovic’s status as the greatest tennis player of all time remains one widely debated.

After all, context is always key in these arguments, citing respective eras and competition as imperative sources.

And whilst many might argue that Roger Federer had it far tougher, bursting onto the scene earlier than his two great rivals and battling with the likes of Pete Sampras, Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi and more before Nadal and Djokovic emerged, it all remains subjective.

What is not subjective is the titles, of which the Serbian sits above all else.

And, should he now continue his conquest and win Olympic gold, before winning another Grand Slam title too, he will be indisputably the number one, claiming the one title he lacks, and moving alone at the top for most majors won.

For now, fans will defend their favourite players to the death until those definitive titles are won by Djokovic.
