American men’s tennis is in a great spot currently.

Right now, no country has more players inside the ATP top 30 than the US, with two of the countrymen in the top ten.

Taylor Fritz is the highest-ranked American player on the men’s tour, with the former Indian Wells Open champion placed seventh in the world.

Just behind Fritz in the rankings is world number eight Ben Shelton, who, still just 23 years old, is fresh off winning his first title of 2026 in Dallas.

Shelton has been tipped by many as one of the favourites to close the gap on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, which Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou recently discussed.

Patrick Mouratoglou names four promising young players on the tour

When asked who can challenge Sinner and Alcaraz to make a new big three, Mouratoglou said in a post on Instagram: “Maybe Shelton, but he needs to progress in his game, and I’m sure he will.

“He has a great coach, which is his father, but with a lot of experience, both as a player and as a coach for 20 years.

“They have good chemistry together. He has a huge game, he’s very ambitious, and he’s confident in his abilities.

“If it’s not him, of course, Fonseca, it could be Mensik. He’s 20 years old. He’s 17 in the world; he won a Masters 1000. Fonseca is 19.

“Of course, Fonseca has the potential without any doubt, but he’s not the only one.

“Tien, I think, is amazing. He’s extremely young, too; he’s 20. It looks like the guy is 35 years old with 15 years of experience on tour, because he’s so calm, so much in control, so clear in his choices on the court.

“And even during the emotional moments, you feel like it doesn’t touch him. He doesn’t have the huge shots, like a big serve or a huge forehand, but he’s lefty, and he’s very strong mentally.

“Actually, he has a very good coach now, who’s Michael Chang, that we all remember. Guys from my generation, not yours for sure. And I’m sure I’m forgetting some guys that can be the third guy, or maybe they won’t be a third guy.”

The story of Learner Tien’s 2026 campaign on the ATP Tour so far

After his impressive first full season on the ATP Tour in 2025, Tien kicked his 2026 campaign off with a second-round exit at the Brisbane International.

He quickly bounced back at the Australian Open, though, where he achieved his best Grand Slam result so far by making the quarterfinals.

Tien then suffered another early exit at the Dallas Open to former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic, losing to the Croatian in straight sets.

But once again, Tien picked his form back up by making the semifinals of the Delray Beach Open.

He will now embark on his run at the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the season in Indian Wells.
