Patrick McEnroe named a fellow American that he thinks is the most underrated on the ATP Tour.

The season continues to heat up as the best players on the men’s tour compete for the Indian Wells Masters, the first ATP 1000 title of the season.

American fans will be hoping their players can lift the title on home soil, and there is certainly a chance of success.

The likes of Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton are leading the charge for the States, but there is another player in contention that Patrick McEnroe thinks deserves more recognition.

Patrick McEnroe says Tommy Paul is the ATP’s most underrated player

Following the conclusion of the ‘Big 3’ era of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, the duo of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have taken over at the Grand Slams.

That being said, other players now have a greater chance of contending for and winning majors, in addition to other big tournaments such as Masters 1000 events.

A player who has been quietly putting himself in contention to win bigger tournaments and improving his consistency is Tommy Paul, who McEnroe thinks is an underrated player, especially after recently breaking into the top 10.

“Tommy Paul is probably under-rated as an athlete and is probably the most pure tennis player of the current group, so all of them are in there as contenders, but none of them I would predict are favourites to win a major,” he told Tennis 365.

Patrick McEnroe expects Joao Fonseca to be contending for Grand Slam tiles

Tennis fans are always keen on identifying the next player that can become a superstar of the game.

Following his impressive end to 2024 by winning the Next Gen ATP Finals and outstanding Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open, Brazil’s Joao Fonseca has got plenty of people talking.

He won his first title in Buenos Aires and as he contours to adjust to life on the ATP Tour, his game will only continue to improve.

In addition to praising the American players for their constituency, McEnroe thinks Fonseca has shown enough to suggest he will be a top contender for majors in the future.

“I would throw Joao Fonseca into the mix as someone who may also be contending for majors in the next few years,” he added. “So it’s not going to be easy, but it is nice to see the Americans doing so well in the rankings.”
