Rafael Nadal is a legend of the sport, but few can argue that his time on court is coming to an end.

He himself has been open about this steady decline, with his body routinely failing him at crucial moments.

2024 has been much more positive in that regard, allowing him to feature in quite a few tournaments, and because of this it still feels like he has more to offer before his retirement is confirmed.

However, with this latest news, it seems he has taken one large step towards that sad inevitability.

Tennis pundit makes Rafael Nadal prediction

Speaking on the Tennis Channel, reacting to the shocking but also expected news that Rafael Nadal had pulled out of the US Open, pundit Pam Shriver and journalist Jon Wertheim were on hand to offer their instant reactions.

After all, it marks a monumental decision from the Spaniard, who remains coy about when his official retirement may be.

Confirming that the Laver Cup will be his next event, there are fears that he could look to call time on his sparkling career in Berlin, taking inspiration from his long-time rival and friend Roger Federer, who also retired two years earlier at this same tournament.

However, focusing on the US Open, Shriver actually made a prediction that does not bode well for those hoping that Nadal might prolong his career, as she reflected: ‘Well I think he speaks the truth. He also mentioned that he’s going to miss the electric nighttimes in Arthur Ashe and isn’t that the case. When we think back to all the years, all the times he won this championship. What an amazing thing.

‘I don’t think we’re going to see him at the US Open ever again as a player, but what a legacy he’s left.’

Rafael Nadal has it in him to enjoy one more year on tour

Whilst this marks a sensible decision for Rafael Nadal, who completely ignored the grass-court season in order to focus on keeping his body safe on the clay of the 2024 Paris Olympics, it is clear that at this point in his career, the 38-year-old is focusing on nostalgia and legacy in certain competitions rather than his chase for titles.

After all, that race is almost certainly run, and it is not like the 22-time Grand Slam champion needs to add any more silverware to his trophy cabinet.

He has already won pretty much all there is to win, and is only still around because of his love for the sport now.

So, where better to end his time playing than in Paris once again, waiting until April of next year to play in Roland Garros.

This year’s tournament was not kind to Nadal, handing him a first-round draw against Alexander Zverev, an eventual finalist.

Hopefully, should he decide against retirement, he can prioritise that event and enjoy a better run at things before getting the tearful farewell his legacy has earned.
