Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz were among the ATP stars in action on day two of the Australian Open, with both progressing to the next round.
The Australian Open has been heavily criticised for its scheduling, with Djokovic, Alcaraz and Nick Kyrgios having all been involved early on in proceedings.
Kyrgios lost his Australian Open opener, although the 2022 Wimbledon finalist does still have a doubles adventure to come.
Jannik Sinner meanwhile joins Djokovic and Alcaraz in round two, where the ATP number one takes on Australian Tristan Schoolkate.
The Serbian has been drawn to face Jaime Faria in Melbourne, with the Spaniard set to take on Yoshihito Nishioka.

Carlos Alcaraz’s energy and intensity reminds Novak Djokovic of Rafael Nadal
And if all goes well for Djokovic and Alcaraz at the Australian Open, they could be in for a very exciting quarter-final clash.
Asked in his post-match press conference what it is like facing the Spanish superstar, Djokovic couldn’t help but mention Rafael Nadal in his response.
“I mean, it’s quite far to talk about a potential matchup against him in quarters. But just overall, he brings so much energy and intensity on the court. From that perspective, reminds me a lot of Rafa.

“Just such a complete player. He can hurt you from anywhere on any court on any surface. He has shown that. His versatility is amazing.
“That he was able at such a young age to reach that level of tennis and I think mental maturity on the court, which is impressive. Makes him one of the best players in the world the last three, four years, without a doubt.
“He’s winning Slams every year now consecutively for a few years in a row. I’m sure that he’s not going to stop here. We’re going to see Carlos for many years to follow.”
What is the head-to-head record between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz?
Alcaraz and Djokovic have gotten to know each other very well in recent years as the latter winds down his career and the former just gets going.
They have met seven times across the ATP Tour, with the Serbian narrowly boasting a positive head-to-head record of 4-3.

| 2024 | Novak Djokovic | Paris Olympics | Final | Outdoor Clay | 76(3) 76(2) |
| 2024 | Carlos Alcaraz | Wimbledon | Final | Outdoor Grass | 62 62 76(4) |
| 2023 | Novak Djokovic | ATP Finals | Semi-final | Indoor Hard | 63 62 |
| 2023 | Novak Djokovic | ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati | Final | Outdoor Hard | 57 76(7) 76(4) |

At 37, he is 16 years older than Alcaraz, and therefore has the advantage of experience over the 21-year-old.
But the Spaniard will be hungry to settle his head-to-head record with the legendary figure as soon as possible, which could be as soon as this month.

He will also want revenge for the 2024 Paris Olympic final that Djokovic won, although that was immediately after Alcaraz beat the Serbian in the Wimbledon final for the second year running.
Remarkably, such has been their quality in recent times, all seven of their ATP matches have come in semi-finals or later.
