Novak Djokovic was looking to win his first title since taking Olympic Gold in Paris last year.
The Serbian star had already lost one final in 2025, when Djokovic fell to Jakub Mensik at the Miami Open in March.
Reaching his second final of the season at the Geneva Open, Djokovic was determined to come home with the trophy, but was made to work hard for it.

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz led by a set to love, and took Djokovic to a tiebreaker in the second and third sets, but eventually fell short, as the 24-time Grand Slam champion emerged victorious in Switzerland.
After the match, Djokovic shared his thoughts on the final, apologizing to Hurkacz for the result.

During the trophy presentation, Djokovic congratulated Hurkacz on his efforts in Geneva.
“I know it’s a bitter taste in the mouth to lose the match like this, I’m sorry for that. I think you were, for most of the match, the better player,” he said.
“Honestly, I fought, but I want to give you huge credit for playing some amazing tennis this week.
“Congrats to your team as well. I know how it feels to be injured with the knee, it’s a big challenge to come back, you’ve managed to cut your comeback short, and reach already a very high level.
“I wish you all the best in Paris and London.
“I really enjoy playing you this way, but maybe shorter matches in the future would be nice, you’re way or my way, whatever it is, just a little bit less stress.”
Djokovic then shared some kind words to Hurkacz, praising his character.

“Thank you also for being inspirational to me and all of us, as a human being, you’re an amazing player, all of the tour knows how good of a person you are, but for people here who maybe don’t know you so well, deserve to know how good you are, how kind and respectful you are,” he said.
Hurkacz was quick to congratulate his victorious opponent and said how the Serb ‘inspires’ him.
“First of all, congrats to Novak [Djokovic] and his family, his team, 100th tournament is a lot,” said Hurkacz.
“It’s really inspiring how you present yourself on the court, off the court, yeah, it’s really incredible what you have achieved, congrats for that, and congrats for what you’re doing for the whole sport of tennis.”
Djokovic and Hurkacz will now travel to Paris for the French Open, as the Serb gets set to take on Mackenzie McDonald in his opener, while the Pole faces off against Joao Fonseca.
Novak Djokovic reacts as he becomes the third ATP star to win 100 career titles
Djokovic’s 2025 Geneva Open triumph was his 100th on the ATP Tour, as he became just the third player in men’s tennis history to reach a century of titles.
During his on-court interview, the 38-year-old reacted to his landmark win, reflecting on the match.
“I had to work for it, that’s for sure. Hubi [Hurkacz] was probably closer to the victory the entire match than I was,” he said.
“I had some chances in the first set to break his serve, didn’t do it, then that game that ended up with the double fault on set point, and all of a sudden the match went to his side in a sense, I was just trying to hang in there.

“I don’t know how I broke his serve; he probably broke himself in the third when he was 4-3 up, but this is what happens at this level, the highest level, few points decide the winner.
“Incredible match, 7-6 in the third, full stadium with a beautiful atmosphere, grateful to clinch the 100th here.”
Djokovic’s win was his eighth in a row against Hurkacz, as he continues to enjoy success against the world number 31.
