Nick Kyrgios has given tennis fans plenty to cheer about since his return to the ATP Tour at the Brisbane International.

Kyrgios impressed fans alongside Novak Djokovic on their doubles debut, where they overcame Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies.

But the Australian failed to continue that momentum into his Brisbane International singles venture, with Kyrgios losing to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in round one.

Mpetshi Perricard has predicted a strong future for Kyrgios, but it remains to be seen exactly how the latter will manage his injury issues.

The former ATP Tour number 13 has returned following wrist surgery, having also suffered with knee problems in recent times.

Nick Kyrgios suggests whether he will play in the Australian Open

Kyrgios, a seven-time ATP Tour winner, has now provided an update on his situation as the 2025 Australian Open rapidly approaches.

“Yeah, I mean, I’m commentating the French Open, so I’ll have to be there,” he said in his Brisbane International press conference.

“Yeah, I don’t know. I think I was really excited for the Aus Open, but after today… obviously I’m super excited. If I’m able to play, I’m able to play. But the reality kind of set in to me.

“That’s a best-of-three match with my wrist. If I’m able to… not only is a Grand Slam mentally really draining, you’re there for two-and-a-half, three weeks, it’s physically a grind. One of the hardest things to do in any sport is win a Grand Slam in men’s tennis.

“I think I almost need a miracle, and I need the stars to align for my wrist to hold up in a Grand Slam for sure.

“Today, if this was a Grand Slam, we may still be out on court, and I don’t know how I’d pull up the next day or the day after. Yeah, that’s kind of the reality setting in.

“But look, I’m just so happy to be part of the Australian summer again, and hopefully my partner continues to play the doubles here, it would be fun.

“But I completely understand if he wants to prioritise the singles. Yeah, I’m keen to see what happens around the Open.”

Nick Kyrgios shares how he will prepare for the Australian Open

Australian Open fans will undoubtedly want to see their home favourite in action in Melbourne, even if he isn’t 100%.

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist put on a superb show in the Brisbane International doubles alongside Djokovic, with a running tweener the highlight of his impressive display.

But given he last played at the Stuttgart Open in June 2023, Kyrgios won’t be rushing back to a busy schedule or indeed the pressures of a Grand Slam anytime soon.

Fortunately, however, he remains confident about an appearance at his home major, with the Australian also sharing his preparation plans for the week-and-a-half prior to the tournament.

“Probably go home to Canberra for a couple of days,” he said. “I will see my dog. That’s the first thing I want to do.

“Then I’ll just see how my wrist pulls up from the load of this week. First of all, that’s the priority. If it feels good, we start building back up on the tennis courts, start going back to work. Yeah, we go, head to Melbourne, I have a couple of things to do there.

“Then, yeah that’s it. I don’t have any plan after the Australian Open tennis-wise, to be honest. You know, I’m really confident I could play the Australian Open.

“It’s just depending on how my body is, how much tennis I can play. Yeah, I guess that’s what I will do. Go home for a couple of days and get ready for the Open.”
