Nick Kyrgios shared some insight into what is going throughout his mind when training for the Miami Open.

The Australian returned to the ATP Tour at the start of 2025 following a nightmare run of injuries that kept him out of action for over 18 months.

Kyrgios’ wrist, which he had surgery on, gave him problems during his Indian Wells match against Botic van de Zandschulp, which he was unable to finish.

But the Australian completed his first match at the Miami Open, where he came from a set down to emerge victorious.

What was Nick Kyrgios thinking when he was training next to Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Open?

Nick Kyrgios aims to climb back up the rankings after a long absence from the ATP Tour.

When healthy he was one of the most dangerous players on the circuit and he competed against the world’s best on numerous occasions.

This is what was running throughout Kygios’ mind when he was training next to former World number one Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Open.

Grateful he is able to play to tennis again when at times that look in jeopardy, Kyrgios told Tennis Channel: “I was on a practice court yesterday hitting next to Medvedev and I was like me and this guy played quarter-finals of Grand Slams, fourth rounds of Grand Slams and I have been very successful against some of these top guys who are now dominating.

“To have this surgery and start from the bottom basically. I never thought I would play tennis again at this level and win matches again so this is a pretty big moment in my career.

“There was a lot of doubters saying you are not going to come back and not going to win a match at this point, so I am glad I can kindly silence it a little bit and there’s a little bit more petrol left in the tank.”

Nick Kyrgios provides a fitness update after winning opening round at Miami Open

In Miami Kyrgios came from behind to defeat Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

He has had some tight matches this year but has now come out on the winning side and he looked relieved as he walked to the net to shake hands with his American opponent.

Unlike at Indian Wells, Kyrgios was able to complete the match and later provided an update on his wrist.

“It’s numb at the moment so I don’t know what that means. We will see how it pulls up,” the Australian shared.

“I will do my routine, I have got the best team, I would not be sitting here without my team. You have got to rest and recover, I say that but I might have to celebrate a little bit, I don’t know!”
