For some Nick Kygrios’s return to tennis cannot come soon enough. But there are others who may be quite enjoying life without one of the sport’s most divisive stars.

Kyrgios is renowned as one of the most outspoken players in tennis, with the 29-year-old involved in a lot of controversies throughout his career.

What is undeniable is that the he brings eyes to the sport, though. His eye catching tennis, combined with his combustable temperament means that you are never certain exactly what you are going to get from the big-hitting Australian.

Kyrgios has been out of action for more than a year because of a fitness concern, which has meant that he has missed the last five Grand Slams.

After being out of action for so long, many believe that it is unlikely to see the former world number 11 on the court again.

Nick Kyrgios denies retirement talk

However, Kyrgios, while responding to a question on his official account on that social media platform Instagram, stated that he has not retired from the sport despite having three surgeries in last 18 months and that he is very much looking forward to returning to the court.

“No, everyone who knows me and actually follows me knows I have just had three surgeries in the last year and a half and I’m getting back on court,” he said.

“Takes time you know, you don’t just get surgery and lay on the couch for two weeks and get back to making the Wimbledon final. So, yeah, it will take its time.”

The unfortunate Nick Kyrgios

Kyrgios’ injury could not have come at a worse time because he was going through undoubtedly the best phase of his professional career in 2022.

Just months before getting injury, the Canberra-born star played in the final of Wimbledon where he lost to the reigning world number one Serbia’s Novak Djokovic with a score of 4–6, 6–3, 6–4, 7–6(7–3).

Only time will whether the two-time Davis Cup semifinalist will be able to return to his very best or will he return as a shadow of a player once he was.

The likes of Dominic Thiem, Andy Murray and Matteo Berrettini have all returned from long-term injury problems recently, but have been unable to reach past glories.

Kyrgios’ last appearance in a major event was back in 2022 US Open where he was knocked out after losing to Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the quarter-final, in a five-set thriller with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Interestingly, that was only the fourth time when Kyrgios played in the quarter-final or beyond in any Grand Slam in his entire career.
