Nick Kyrgios predicts if Alexander Zverev will ever win a Grand Slam and claims ‘tennis fans are the worst’

Alexander Zverev is out of the French Open, having been defeated by an inspired Novak Djokovic just last night.

What this superhuman 38-year-old continues to do on tour is nothing short of extraordinary, and long may it continue. He now sets up a semi-final clash with Jannik Sinner, which is sure to excite the tennis community.

However, for the German, it’s another opportunity that slips by.

Last year’s finalist at this event, this will mark a disappointing way to exit Roland Garros given how proficient he has been on clay in recent years.

Nick Kyrgios has insisted that he should not give up hope just yet though.

Chatting to his fans on Instagram Live after last night’s enthralling day of French Open action, there had to be some focus on Novak Djokovic’s success.

After all, Kyrgios and Djokovic are good friends, a bond forged from the flames of their Wimbledon final in 2022.

However, he actually touched on Alexander Zverev first, as this marked another disappointing Grand Slam campaign from the man who continues to fall short of winning that elusive Major.

Asked if he felt the 28-year-old would ever win, Kyrgios replied: ‘I think Zverev can win a Grand Slam. I think he genuinely can. Man, tennis fans are the worst. Tennis media are the worst.

‘Zverev can win a Grand Slam. He has been finals of the US Open and one set away. He has been finals of Roland Garros, one set away. This guy has been to finals of Grand Slams and then one set away. One set!

‘He has played Dominic Thiem and Carlos Alcaraz. This is another quarter-final. He is right there and knocking on the door.

‘I think people are way too hard on Zverev and he is very capable. It’s tough now because of Sinner and Alcaraz and I get it but he could do it. He just needs to keep believing and he is well good enough.’

Whilst there is still time for him to overcome this drought, there’s no denying that Zverev is currently one of the greatest players to never win a Grand Slam.

After all, having been to three different finals now, he arguably could not have come closer.

A consistent threat in every tournament he enters, his residency at the apex of the rankings outlines just how dangerous he continues to be.

And yet, when it comes to those crucial moments in the majors, he can’t seem to finish things off.

Zverev is an elite-level player who just needs to find a bit of luck in the big moments. As Kyrgios has predicted, the narratives around these hoodoos can be slightly dramatic when a player of such quality is consistently knocking on the door.
