Nick Kyrgios enjoyed an entertaining return to the ATP Tour, although his Brisbane International adventure is now over.

The Australian won his Brisbane International doubles opener alongside Novak Djokovic, but then Kyrgios lost in singles to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Mpetshi Perricard loved playing against Kyrgios, with the former firing down 36 aces on his way to an impressive win.

The latter then returned to doubles, but Kyrgios and Djokovic fell to Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus in round two.

Djokovic meanwhile passed his first round singles test against Rinky Hijikata in his first ATP Tour event of 2025.

The Serbian now meets Gael Monfils in the second round, with Mpetshi Perricard taking on Frances Tiafoe.

The young Frenchman was voted the ATP’s Most Improved Player in 2024, and he has certainly made an impression on Kyrgios.

“I mean, look, he probably had the best year of his career last year,” Kyrgios said in his post-match press conference.

“Obviously he won Most Improved Player, obviously feeling very confident, won some big titles last year. The Basel event is always stacked. He beat some amazing players there.

“I obviously went into the match understanding how he played. I already knew that he liked to hit two first serves, but props to him, he’s found what works for his game style and he’s committed to that.

“He’s going to do some damage, for sure. He’s going to have a long career. He’s got an easy action on his serve. There were no real dips in speed or anything like that.

“For me, honestly, it was a great match, considering I hadn’t played in 18 months. And to put myself in a winning position was exciting.

“It was just good to be back out there and to say that, you know, I can still play a level against someone like that who is coming off the best year of their career and only getting better and confident, and I’m coming back and I asked the question, and he just played a couple big points better than I did.

“Yeah, I felt relatively pretty good physically. My legs, my body felt really good. I felt fit and I’m in great shape.

“Obviously felt some discomfort with the wrist, but he does serve and hit the ball a lot bigger than probably some of the people that I have practised with in the last year.

“But, you know, there is no hiding. Once you commit to playing like that, you’ve got to be ready. I’m relatively really happy with how it went.

“You know, if I had to win that match, I’m honestly not sure if I’d be able to play my second round. So there are positives, but there is a lot more work to do. But yeah, props to him. He’s a hell of a player.

“I have played [Ivo] Karlovic, [John] Isner, [Milos] Raonic, all the big servers, and he’s got the biggest serve by far. Yeah, that was interesting. And it sucked.”

Who has hit the most ATP Tour aces of all time?

Aged just 21, Mpetshi Perricard already boasts two Tour-level titles, having won in Lyon and Basel in 2024.

The youngster claimed wins over the likes of Alexander Bublik and Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the former, and Ben Shelton and Holger Rune in the latter.

He climbed up to a career-high 30th in the world rankings last season, finishing with a 16-12 win-loss record.

There was also a best-ever Grand Slam finish thanks to his fourth round venture at Wimbledon, where he was beaten by semi-finalist Lorenzo Musetti.

All of that success was undoubtedly helped by his stunning serving ability, with Mpetshi Perricard smashing 532 aces from just 28 matches.

That figure put him eighth in the list for the 2024 season, with the figures of Karlovic, Isner and Raonic well within reach if he continues on his current trajectory.
