Nick Kyrgios has made plenty of enemies throughout his career, and it seems like Jannik Sinner could be the latest.

Kyrgios is returning to Grand Slam tennis at the 2025 Australian Open, where he could meet Sinner on the court.

The Australian has been critical of the Italian regarding his positive drug test earlier this year, with Kyrgios really wanting to play Sinner in Melbourne next month.

Before this week’s World Tennis League, Kyrgios had not featured on the court since the 2023 Stuttgart Open, having suffered from various injuries.

During that time, the controversial figure has undertaken media duties, commentating at the likes of Wimbledon and the US Open.

Further information about his role at the latter tournament has now emerged, with Kyrgios having been criticised on X for not interviewing Sinner in New York.

“Kyrgios is 100% one of those guys who trash-talks someone online and then sees them in person and immediately backs down,” one person commented.

A second concurred: “100% true, we saw it at the US Open when he could have interviewed Sinner more than once but he never did because he is a coward.”

But Kyrgios was quick to defend himself, with the Australian clarifying: “No ESPN told me not to do it lol. But continue to have zero idea about anything.”

Australian Open fans will want Nick Kyrgios v Jannik Sinner

There are several intriguing storylines playing out ahead of the 2025 Australian Open, but a Kyrgios versus Sinner clash may be the most exciting.

They have only met once in ATP Tour-level competition, where the Italian beat the Australian in their Indian Wells round of 16 clash in 2022.

Kyrgios was handed a penalty for a furious outburst during that match, in what was one of many such incidents throughout his career.

The majority of the Australian Open fans will likely be cheering on the home favourite from day one next month, although defending champion Sinner should also have a great following.

Those fans have also been treated to potential appearances from Simona Halep and Lleyton Hewitt’s son Cruz, who have both received qualifying wildcards.
