The 2025 edition of the Wimbledon championships has been the year of upsets, with a record number of seeded players crashing out of both draws.

Following Friday’s play, just 12 seeds remain in the men’s tournament, while four of the top five women’s seeds are already out of the championships.

The biggest shocks include world number three Alexander Zverev, Roland Garros champion Coco Gauff, and home hope Jack Draper.

With the event wide open, a chance for a maiden appearance in the Wimbledon final is now up for grabs for several stars, which is something Nick Kyrgios would like to see even more going forward.

When asked on Talksport if women should play best of five sets, Kyrgios responded: “No. I actually want best of five sets to leave men’s tennis as well, up until the quarter-final.

“I think that would fix a lot of the scheduling issues, it would fix these delays on court in the earlier rounds, you would see more upsets.

“These bigger guys, especially in the first couple of rounds. Alcaraz went down an early set, and then already the alarm bells are ringing.

“It’s like I am on the brink already, first round of Wimbledon, whereas you always knew he was going to find a way and win in the best of five.

“If it were best of three up to the quarter-finals, I think you are going to see a lot more intensity, and then when you get to the quarter-finals, you can play best of five sets.

“I think that would add a lot more excitement to Grand Slams. You would see a lot more new champions as well. But I don’t know if it’s ever going to change.”

The top seeds still remaining at this year’s Wimbledon championships

The number one seeds in both the men’s and women’s draws still remain at Wimbledon in the form of Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, is also still in the tournament, despite difficult matches against Fabio Fognini and Jan-Lennard Struff.

After Sabalenka, the next highest seed remaining in the women’s draw is 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva.

Five of the top 10 men’s seeds are left in the tournament, including world number six Novak Djokovic, who is in pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.
