Monica Puig picks her favourite to win the US Open and tells everyone to ‘watch out’ for her

Monica Puig has named a WTA player who has recently returned to form as the favourite for the US Open title.

Since the North American hard court swing began the players have been aiming to build their form and momentum to peak in time for the final Grand Slam of the season.

The Canadian and Cincinnati Open in particular gave not only the players but also the fans a clearer idea of who is best positioned to have a strong run in New York.

Things were made very clear in the mind of Puig, who has no doubt on which player she thinks will be the frontrunner at the US Open.

Who does Monica Puig think is the favourite for the US Open title?

There are several players who are in the running for the US Open crown. Iga Swiatek is always a threat given she is the World number one and has previously won the tournament.

Jessica Pegula has put herself in contention after her Canada and Cincinnati performances, and defending champion Coco Gauff cannot be ruled out at the US Open despite her poor form.

But after watching Aryna Sabalenka dominate the Cincinnati Open, Puig is backing the Belarusian for the title in New York.

“She ran away with a match that is really setting the tone for the US Open and the rest of the competition better watch out because if she is looking this good, then she’s my personal favourite to win the title,” the 2016 Olympic champion told the Tennis Channel podcast.

Aryna Sabalenka will hope to go one better at the US Open in 2024

If there is one title Sabalenka will be determined to win, it is the US Open.

She reached the final for the first time in 2023, and was up a set against Gauff before the 20-year-old changed the match in her favour.

Sabalenka grew frustrated with the defensive skills of her opponent and as a result began to make more errors as the crowd showed their support for Gauff.

The World number three claimed a three-set win and in the process won the first Grand Slam of her career.

Sabalenka’s frustrations boiled over and was seen smashing her racket in the locker room after the match. She is certainly in the form to go one better at the US Open this year.
