Mirra Andreeva is through to the fourth round of the Australian Open after earning her second consecutive straight-sets win.

The Russian, seeded eighth at Melbourne Park, overcame Romanian star Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-4 to advance.

Andreeva kicked her season off with a title at the Adelaide International, where she beat fellow teenage sensation Victoria Mboko in the final.

At the Australian Open so far, the 18-year-old has dropped just one set, which she conceded in her opening tie with Donna Vekic.

With her triumph over Ruse, Andreeva has just achieved a feat no woman has managed in a quarter of a century.

Mirra Andreeva matches Venus Williams’ record from 2001

Andreeva made her Australian Open debut in 2024, when she knocked out sixth seed Ons Jabeur en route to the fourth round before bowing out to Barbora Krejcikova.

The year after, she reached the fourth round again; this time suffering defeat to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Now, having matched her finishes from 2024 and 2025, Andreeva is the first player in 25 years to reach the fourth round in all three of her first Australian Open appearances, according to Opta Ace.

The last player to manage this was Venus Williams, who did so in 1998, 1999, and 2001.

Williams reached the quarterfinals in both of her first two appearances and went all the way to the semifinals in 2001.

Mirra Andreeva’s next opponent at the Australian Open

Andreeva will now face her biggest test so far at the Australian Open; 12th seed Elina Svitolina.

The two stars have clashed just once before on the WTA Tour, with the sole meeting coming at the Indian Wells Open in 2025.

There, Andreeva emerged victorious in straight sets, defeating the Ukrainian 7-5, 6-3 to reach the semifinals.

Andreeva is looking to achieve the best finish of her career at the Australian Open, and her second best at a Grand Slam.

She recorded her greatest major run at Roland Garros in 2024 by making the semifinals before exiting the tournament to Jasmine Paolini.
