Matteo Berrettini sends message to Grigor Dimitrov after losing to him in five-set thriller at Wimbledon

Matteo Berrettini saw his Wimbledon campaign come to an end on Saturday after losing to Grigor Dimitrov in five sets.

The Italian, a former finalist at the All England Club, fell to Dimitrov 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 3-6 on Centre Court.

Berrettini was close to completing a remarkable comeback, but ultimately couldn’t get over the line in the fifth, during which the Bulgarian’s return game was the deciding factor.

Despite the loss, the 30-year-old’s third-round finish was his best result at Wimbledon since 2023.

A day after exiting the tournament, Berrettini took to social media to send a message to Dimitrov.

In a post on Instagram, Berrettini said: “Another @wimbledon in the books, another week to be proud of!

“Last night it was a real battle. Congrats, @grigordimitrov! Head up and we move forward.”

After an injury-ridden last few years on the ATP Tour, Berrettini has impressed on the Grand Slam stage in his last two campaigns.

Berrettini enjoyed his best Grand Slam run since 2022 at Roland Garros earlier this season by making the quarterfinals.

In the last eight of the French Open, Berrettini ultimately had to retire due to injury in his clash with compatriot Matteo Arnaldi.

At Wimbledon, he earned big wins over Stan Wawrinka and 20th seed Arthur Fils.

Matteo Berrettini’s new ranking after Wimbledon run

Berrettini, a former world number six, has seen his ranking plummet outside the top 100 recently.

But with some positive results, he has managed to climb back up and now he is back inside the top 50 following the run at Wimbledon.

He moved up nine places by making the third round, and is now the world number 42 in the live ATP rankings.

Berrettini reached his career-high of sixth in the world during the 2022 season, the year after he made the Wimbledon final.
