Matteo Berrettini will miss the French Open as he continues to recover from injury.
The Italian’s 2024 campaign has been plagued with fitness issues and has competed in just four tournaments as a result, one of which was a Challenger event in March.
After losing the final of the challenger tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, the 28-year-old’s season began on the ATP Tour in Miami, where he was beaten by Andy Murray in the first round.
Almost three weeks after the Miami loss, the former Wimbledon finalist won an ATP 250 title in Marrakech and it looked to be the start of his comeback.
But his injury woes soon returned and now he is not able to compete at the second Grand Slam of the year.
Matteo Berrettini is not yet ready for Grand Slam action
2024 is now the third successive season that Berrettini will not be appearing at the French Open.
He missed the 2022 and 2023 events due to and he took to social media to announce the same thing will occur this season.
The former World Number six posted on Instagram: “Despite training at an increasingly high level, my team and I feel I am not quite ready for multiple five set matches in a row.
“I will wait to make my return on grass. Thank you for your continued support. I’m nearly there, just need a little more time.”

When was Matteo Berrettini’s most recent match?
Including the challenger tour, Berrettini has played just 12 matches in 2024 so far.
His last contest came in the opening round of the Monte Carlo Masters, just two days after securing the eighth title of his career in Marrakech. He faced Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanović, but was convincingly beaten 6-3, 6-1.
The big server was due to play compatriot Stefano Napolitano in the opening round of the Italian Open, but he pulled out due to the same fitness issues stopping him from competing at Roland Garros.
