Mats Wilander suggests if he thinks Carlos Alcaraz can win as many Grand Slams as Roger Federer

Carlos Alcaraz has now won his sixth Grand Slam singles title after winning the US Open for a second time.

Alcaraz sent a message to Jannik Sinner after beating him in the US Open final, getting revenge from his defeat at Wimbledon.

It has been a really impressive tournament from Alcaraz, who has showcased improvements in his game en route to his triumph in New York.

With Alcaraz continuing to build his name in the tennis history books, former world number one Mats Wilander has predicted if he can overtake Roger Federer.

Mats Wilander says there is ‘a good chance’ Carlos Alcaraz will win 20 Grand Slams

After winning his sixth Grand Slam title at just 22 years old, Alcaraz has already matched the likes of Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg.

Alcaraz is now also only one major behind the aforementioned Wilander, who was full of praise for the Spaniard when reacting to his win on Eurosport.

Wilander even went on to suggest that he thinks it is likely that Alcaraz will go on to win 20 Grand Slam titles, which is how many Federer won before he retired.

“Alcaraz was just a little bit too good,” said Wilander. “Today he was as sharp as he’s been all tournament and he was too good. He’s still so young – that’s what’s scary. He’s got six majors, back to world number one which is huge for him. The youngest man to win six Grand Slams, he broke another record of mine.

“I thought Jannik Sinner was going to come out on top but Carlos Alcaraz – wow – when he plays well he really is the best player in the world. A huge victory. Day in and day out, you play for the world number one ranking. He’s got it back and it’s not easy to get it back.

“He’s good everywhere. He’s so solid, so nice, the niceness is the best part. He’s a great player but he’s so nice, so humble, so youthful and having fun all the time. He’s a great ambassador for our sport.

“He’s been with the same team since he was very young, I think he’ll win so much more. The question is, will he win as much as Federer, [Novak] Djokovic and [Rafael] Nadal. Will he win 20 Slams? There is a good chance he will.”

“He was so focussed, he didn’t make many unforced errors. If he can serve like he did today, I don’t think there is any weakness whatsoever. Today he served incredibly well. Normally Jannik Sinner has the better serve but not today. When you have a good serve it sticks around and he will serve great from now on. They both know they have the tennis world by the hands and they’re controlling it. They’re going to split the Grand Slams every year for a very long time to go.”

How many Grand Slams had Roger Federer won at 22 years old?

Federer led the Grand Slam records for many years until being overtaken by both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, and now Alcaraz will be looking to become the third man to do just that.

Despite still being so young, Alcaraz is already over a quarter of the way there and is ahead of where Federer was tracking at the same age.

Federer won Wimbledon for the first time in 2003, turning 23 years old with three Grand Slams in total.

While Alcaraz, who still has one more major tournament before his 23rd birthday, has already doubled that figure.

Not only has Alcaraz won another Grand Slam title, but he has also confirmed his return to the top of the ATP rankings.

This will be Alcaraz’s fifth reign as world number one, but first since September 2023.
