Mats Wilander named three skills Carlos Alcaraz possesses that are the same as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

The legendary tennis trio, referred to by many as ‘The Big 3’, led the way in what is arguably the strongest era of men’s tennis.

The three players pushed each other to great heights and contested some of the sport’s greatest matches against one another.

As a result they have inspired a generation of players, one of whom is Alcaraz, a player often described as a combination of the three biggest strengths.

What does Mats Wilander think Carlos Alcaraz has taken from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic?

Many have praised Alcaraz’s explosive and expansive playing style since he began to make his presence felt on tour in 2022. Since then he has claimed four Grand Slam titles and also became the youngest World number one of all time.

What makes Alcaraz so dangerous on court is the fact that he has such a complete game at such a young age, having taken inspiration from arguably tennis’ three greatest players in Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

Commenting on what skills Alcaraz has taken these three tennis icons, Wilander told the Roland Garros Courtside conversations podcast: “Carlos Alcaraz moves as well as Novak, he’s got the same passion as Rafa and he’s got the same craftmanship and grace and feel as Roger Federer.

“All of them have great feel, all three of them have passion and all three of them move beautifully. Alcaraz is a combination of the three.

“Our sport was in a great space because of the big three but to carry it on usually there’s a lull for a couple of years after greatness has left our game. We don’t have that with Alacraz.”

Carlos Alcaraz eyes more success at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Since June, Alcaraz has won his first French Open title and successfully defended the Wimbledon championship trophy.

Now he is eyeing success at the Olympics, an event he will compete in for the first time in his career.

He will play singles and doubles alongside Spanish compatriot Nadal, who is playing in what is likely to be his final Olympics.

Alcaraz will return to Roland Garros to represent his country, the same venue where he defeated Alexander Zverev claimed the French Open for the first time.
