Mats Wilander questioned whether Jannik Sinner can physically withstand the challenge of winning Roland Garros.
The Italian is trying to win the clay court Grand Slam for the first time in his career four months after claiming his first major at the Australian Open in January.
He has yet to produce his best tennis at this event but that could change in 2024 given his excellent season so far.
But Wilander, a three-time Roland Garros winner, thinks there is one question about the Italian that needs to be answered as he competes in Paris.
What does Mats Wilander question about Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros?
Sinner reached the third round of Roland Garros after completing a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win over veteran Richard Gasquet. The 21-year-old held off a late comeback from the Frenchman to reach the third round.
After watching Sinner’s match, Wilander was impressed with how aggressively he played but wondered if his body would hold up given his recent injury.
“I think he will get better on clay, because he will learn how to move into the court and back a little bit more – more so than a hard court. But right now, he’s a freight train when he starts hitting the ball,” the Swede told Eurosport.
“With the backhand, it’s unbelievable how he can be off the ground and still hit the ball so cleanly on the backhand.
“And the serve is giving him points on the clay court too, so right now, I like that he’s playing this aggressively. I don’t know what will happen when he gets tested and has to play three to four hours or how his body will hold up then.”

What did Jannik Sinner say after reaching the third round of Roland Garros?
Sinner delivered a solid performance under the lights on Court Philippe-Chatrier to advance to the next round.
In the process he recorded his third victory over Gasquet and now has a win against him on clay, grass and hard courts.
He registered 38 winners and though he was happy with the win, Sinner stressed the need to make some improvements as he progresses through the draw.
“We try to keep practising, keep trying to improve day-by-day,” he said. “I know I can still improve a couple of things, and I’m looking forward to it.”
