Coco Gauff became the first American woman to win the French Open since 2015 as she beat Aryna Sabalenka to get her hands on a maiden Roland Garros crown.
Gauff was forced into doing things the hard way. The youngster was broken very early on in the first set before eventually losing a 77-minute slog by virtue of an entertaining tie-breaker.
Sabalenka struggled with the ever-changing conditions, however. Despite holding a one-set advantage, Gauff was the player who reacted better after the first set and came roaring back to claim an emotional victory.
Gauff is the first American woman to win this title since Serena Williams in 2015. She also adds to the maiden Grand Slam she won at the US Open back in 2023 to become a serial Grand Slam winner.

Martina Navratilova sends reaction to Coco Gauff after French Open victory
Plenty of famous faces have reacted to this win, with Gauff the toast of the United States. The talented 21-year-old will be delighted to get another Grand Slam to her name and she’s been in wonderful form at this year’s Roland Garros event.
Gauff progressed through the tournament without too much trouble. Madison Keys gave her a scare in the quarter-final, but the second two sets after dropping the first proved routine enough.
After the match, Navratilova reacted on social media and it would appear as though she was impressed with certain aspects of the performance that the American managed to produce on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
She posted: “Congrats to Coco Gauff for winning the 2025 Roland Garros – a great comeback and fight.”
Gauff will now quickly switch her attention to the grass court season and focus on trying to improve on her strongest run at SW19, which is a foray to the fourth round on three occasions.
Barack Obama reacts to Coco Gauff performance
Although Navratilova is tennis royalty, Gauff got some really high praise when the former United States President, Barack Obama, posted on X to speak of his pride at seeing Gauff win the title.
He posted on the platform: “Congratulations to Coco Gauff for an amazing championship at the French Open – the first American singles champion at Roland Garros in a decade. You make us all proud.”
Gauff is an extremely likeable player on the WTA Tour and she richly deserves this title. She can now take pride in winning more than a single Grand Slam crown and at 21, there will definitely be more to come for the American.
