Marin Cilic is not still playing just to make the numbers up on the ATP Tour.

Cilic is a Grand Slam champion, having won the US Open title in 2014 after beating Kei Nishikori in the final.

The Croatian is still competing at 37 years old, despite Cilic undergoing knee surgery in recent years.

Cilic continues to make history on the ATP Tour in the latter stages of his career, and has his sights set on achieving more big goals before he retires from tennis.

Marin Cilic says he still wants to win another Grand Slam title

Cilic climbed over 140 places in the ATP rankings last year and is now the world number 51, but he has had a mixed start to the 2026 season, winning just 10 of his 19 matches.

When speaking in the latest edition of the Off Court with Greg Rusedski podcast, Cilic was asked about his future goals in the sport.

Cilic revealed that he is still targeting a second major title, which still gives him a spark to continue playing.

“In terms of the longer term goals the idea is to try and win another Grand Slam,” said Cilic. “That is behind my training, my routine and getting up every single day. If that is going to happen, I have no idea, but that is something that gives me the spark.

“In the shorter term it is day to day things. Trying to do everything I can, the best I can, to still remember what wins me matches. The focus, the intensity, the excitement of being on the court and the joy of playing.

“And also in training sessions, what to look for, how to improve my strengths and cover my weaknesses. Overall, it is working towards that longer-term goal.”

What is Marin Cilic’s best Grand Slam result since winning the US Open in 2014?

Although Cilic has been able to add to his Grand Slam tally since 2014, he has been very close to doing so.

Having reached two major finals since then, Cilic came particularly close at the 2018 Australian Open, where he lost a five-set final against Roger Federer.

However, Cilic’s best Grand Slam tournament in terms of win-loss record since the 2014 US Open is Wimbledon, where he has won 75% of his matches and reached the fourth round last year.

The only Grand Slam tournament where Cilic has not reached the final before is the French Open, but it is actually the only major where he has been past the fourth round since 2020 after reaching the 2022 semifinals.

Cilic’s best result at the US Open since winning the title in 2014 came one year later, where he reached the semifinals before losing to Novak Djokovic.
