After multiple attempts and trying to win a Grand Slam with several injury setbacks along the way, Madison Keys finally joined tennis’ elite group of major winners.

She became the oldest player to defeat the World number one and two in semi-finals and final at a Grand Slam event since WTA Ranking records began in 1975.

The American is now the first player in the Open Era to win the Australian Open in just three-set matches from the fourth round right through to the final.

Keys received plenty of congratulatory messages, including from the arguably tennis’ greatest player, Serena Williams.

During an Instagram video, Keys revealed what the 23-time Grand Slam champion said to her. “A really nice message that I got was from Serena Williams,” she began.

Madison Keys became the fourth American woman to win a Grand Slam after Serena Williams

Keys illustrated the strength of American women’s tennis when she won the Australian Open title.

This win ensured she re-entered the WTA Tour’s top 10, joining her compatriots Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro.

Keys is also the fourth American woman to win a major after Williams claimed her last at the 2017 Australian Open, and the 43-year-old posted an Instagram message congratulating Keys.

“I just saw Madison Keys, congrats to her winning the Australian Open today. She is an amazing player, Williams said. ”I got to play her a lot. Now she has just won the Australian Open, she is so awesome.

“But also something I was thinking about was that she invested in herself, she invested in her career and time into tennis and being the best she can be. Today she proved she is one of the best in the world.”
