Juan Martin del Potro has continued the trend of legends hanging up their rackets in 2024 after officially retiring from tennis.

Del Potro promised he is happy after retiring, with the Argentine’s fantastic career having been plagued by injury.

But he bows out a legend, with Del Potro thanking Novak Djokovic for coming to Argentina to play a farewell match.

Djokovic and Del Potro enjoyed a great rivalry over the years, with both left very emotional at the conclusion of their final match.

The former now turns his attention to pre-season and the Australian Open, with the latter set for a well-earned rest.

He has now thanked everyone involved, with the 2009 US Open champion writing on Instagram: “Thank you all for making a farewell much more beautiful than I dreamed of.”

Del Potro has officially retired at the age of 36, with the Argentine legend boasting 22 ATP Tour-level titles.

Will Juan Martin del Potro follow Andy Murray into coaching?

Del Potro will certainly be missed by the tennis world, and in particular by former world number one Djokovic.

He joins star trio Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Andy Murray in officially saying farewell to tennis in 2024.

And out of the three, it is three-time Grand Slam champion Murray who has taken the biggest steps towards life after playing.

He turned to golf shortly after his tennis farewell after the Olympics, but is now heading back to the latter after agreeing to coach Djokovic.

Whether Del Potro goes down a similar route remains to be seen, but for now he is likely just cherishing his memories from a glittering career.

A Del Potro and Djokovic partnership certainly wouldn’t be a surprise, with Murray’s link-up with the Serbian coming as a real shock to many.
