Juan Carlos Ferrero’s newest coaching role has been confirmed, and it’s one that nobody would have seen coming.

After all, having shocked the tennis world following his split with Carlos Alcaraz, he would likely have had his pick of most players on the ATP and WTA tours for his next move.

He took the young Spaniard from relative obscurity to the top of the world, laying the foundations for a career that could surpass all who came before him.

And yet, despite likely having the entire tennis world at his feet, Ferrero has pivoted to golf, opting to take up a role coaching the young Spaniard Angel Ayora.

Despite this, he unsurprisingly still remains heavily interested in Alcaraz’s results.

From the outside, Ferrero’s relationship with the six-time Grand Slam champion looked as tight as could be, akin to a father and son.

This was made even more evident after every major title, with Alcaraz heading straight over to his coach for an embrace.

Asked about how it feels to now watch his former pupil from afar, Ferrero admitted: “It’s tough when you see Carlos competing, and you see your whole team sitting in the chair. It’s not easy, what it feels like.”

However, he admitted that he’s been delighted with the performances at the Australian Open, noting: “I’m pleased with how he’s playing and with the fact that he hasn’t lost a set yet. He’s at a great level.”

Ferrero also revealed that he’d received plenty of offers from the tennis tours too, adding: “It is very clear that in the end, tennis is my life and will continue to be so because I continue working in my tennis academy and I am also receiving a lot of offers also at the level of the male and even female circuit.”

Alcaraz has revealed what his relationship with Ferrero is like after the split, and this should surprise no one given the latter’s latest claim.

Carlos Alcaraz’s Australian Open quest for the career Grand Slam so far

It’s no secret that, were he to win the Australian Open, Alcaraz would complete the career Grand Slam. He has made it abundantly clear just how badly he wants it.

The Spaniard is not afraid of ramping up the pressure on himself either, it seems, with this major the only one of the four that eludes him.

Thus far, he has slowly increased his level with each passing match.

Wins over Adam Walton, Yannick Hanfmann and Corentin Moutet saw him build, before unleashing what he had developed on Tommy Paul in the fourth round.
