Jack Draper continued his pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam title on Thursday night, with a statement second-round win at Roland Garros.
In a thriller on Court Philippe Chatrier, Draper defeated Gael Monfils over four sets, booking his place in the third round.
The Frenchman battled his way back into the match, taking the second set off the Briton, but ultimately couldn’t get over the line.
Draper’s next opponent is Joao Fonseca, who he has faced once before at the Indian Wells Open in March, where the world number five emerged victorious.
Their upcoming bout is their first meeting at a major, which tennis legend John McEnroe gave his prediction on.

John McEnroe makes prediction ahead of Jack Draper’s clash with Joao Fonseca
Speaking on TNT Sports after Draper‘s triumph over Monfils, McEnroe said: “He is going to bring the flair and also a lot of fans with him. It will be interesting to see where they put that match.
“It might be a bit annoying for Draper to have the crowd against him again but I think that is what is going to happen, especially if it’s on a small court. So he is going to have to rebound quickly.
“I doubt it is going to be a night match. But it could be because that is box office for us. You are going to see a lot of those two in the next 10 years.
“I sort of hope they do give him the time to regroup and get the wheels back going because that was a very physical and mental match, so he’s going to need a bit of time to deal with Fonseca, who hits as big a ball as Monfils does.”

Jack Draper and Joao Fonseca’s French Open campaigns so far
Both Draper and Fonseca have had an impressive start to the 2025 French Open so far.
Draper began his campaign against Mattia Bellucci in the first round, where he came back to win after an early scare, having lost the first set 6-3 to the Italian.
His next match delivered one of the best matches of the tournament, where home hope Monfils put the 23-year-old to the test in a four-set marathon.
Fonseca kicked off his tournament against 30th seed Hubert Hurkacz, who reached the final of the Geneva Open recently before losing to Novak Djokovic.
The Brazilian dismantled the Pole in straight sets, before earning his second-round victory against Pierre-Hugues Herbert in a match that featured two tiebreaks.
