John McEnroe thinks Andy Murray should be honoured by Wimbledon in a major way.

The 37-year-old made history when he became the first British man in 77 years to triumph at the All-England Club in 2013.

He backed up that victory by winning the title for a second time in 2016, shortly before claiming his second successive Olympic gold medal.

Murray has had a profound impact on tennis and especially for the game in the UK, and retirement seemingly on the horizon, McEnroe thinks the grass court major should appropriately recognise his achievements.

Murray not only has two Wimbledon titles, but he has also claimed the Queen’s club trophy on a record five occasions. He has also claimed the Queen’s and Wimbledon double twice.

Around the grounds at the grass court major the likes of former champions Fred Perry and Virginia Wade have statues in their honour.

This is something McEnroe believes Wimbledon should do for Murray, the event’s most recent British champion.

“If I was making that decision, I would say absolutely, yes, because that’s a long drought, 77 years. He’s absolutely changed the way people look at British tennis,” the tennis commentator said.

“He’s one of the greatest competitors that I’ve ever seen play tennis. It would be well deserved, and it’d be awesome, because two of his three grand slam wins were at Wimbledon plus the Olympics. So that would seem to make a whole lot of sense.”

What is Andy Murray’s Wimbledon record?

Since making his Wimbledon debut in 2005, Murray has claimed 60 victories and suffered 12 defeats at the tournament.

His first final came in 2012 when he faced Roger Federer, but suffered a four set defeat despite taking the first set. He gained some revenge on the Swiss Maestro by beating him in the Olympics final at Wimbledon weeks later.

The following Murray returned to the final and this time faced Novak Djokovic. Murray achieved his dream by claiming a 6–4, 7–5, 6–4 win to lift the trophy for the first time.

His second victory came three years later when he took on the big serving Milos Raonic. He claimed another three-set set win, this time by the scoreline of 6-4, 7-6, 7-6. The last time Murray reached as far as the quarter-finals was 2017, as injuries began to take their toll on the tennis legend.
