John McEnroe seriously annoyed by Joao Fonseca during his French Open match with Jack Draper, ‘do me a favour’

Jack Draper was in imperious form earlier today, brushing aside Joao Fonseca in straight sets to reach round four of the French Open.

There, he will face Alexander Bublik, with a remarkable opportunity presented to reach the quarter-finals of this event.

The Brit’s improvement has been truly sensational, and deserves so much praise. He moves well, never gives in, boasts a monstrous forehand and serve yet has the touch and class to compete there.

Earlier today, he showcased the latter beautifully with a string of drop shots that the Brazilian didn’t even go for in the end.

However, it was this lackadaisical and almost lazy nature which left John McEnroe incensed.

Speaking live on TNT Sports’ US coverage of the French Open, he sat alongside Patrick McEnroe to discuss the match.

And, after Fonseca opted against chasing down another of Jack Draper’s drop shots, John claimed: ‘Do me a favour, could you at least try for those? That was another one that dropped a couple feet inside the service line. Wasn’t an amazing drop shot.’

Patrick concurred: ‘Draper knows now when he goes to the drop shot that he doesn’t even have to hit it that well because Fonseca’s not making a move for it.’

‘Do me a favour,’ John then hopelessly asked. ‘Could you at least try for those? That was another one that dropped a couple feet inside the service line. Wasn’t even an amazing drop shot.’

This led Patrick to deduce that the 22-year-old knew he didn’t even have to be perfect with this particular effort, noting: ‘Draper knows now when he goes to the drop shot that he doesn’t even have to hit it that well because Fonseca’s not making a move for it.’

‘He’s not even trying for it,’ John shot back, before inevitably another drop shot winner saw him start back up for one final tirade: ‘There it is again. He’s not even trying for it! I get that he’s on his heels. I understand that but you’ve got to at least give it a shot.’

‘Nothing’s working for Fonseca today.’

With all the hype around Fonseca, it would’ve been easy to predict an upset today.

However, Draper made certain that such a suggestion was impossible, as he dominated from start to finish with blistering relentlessness.

He avoided the patented Fonseca forehand which has already earned fame, forcing the Brazilian into awkward positions and making him take on shots that had little chance of success.

In all honesty, the world number five showed a maturity expected of someone in his position, putting the young upstart in his place.

What frustrated McEnroe was a lack of effort, as it seemed like Fonseca had given up.

However, it will likely not be long before he’s back ready to exact revenge after such a beatdown, with Draper predicting many matches between himself and Fonseca in the coming years.
