Joao Fonseca is receiving lots of praise following his straight sets victory over ninth seed Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open.

Fonseca is being tipped to achieve big things by Novak Djokovic, as well as many others across the tennis world following his debut Grand Slam victory.

This includes Fonseca being compared to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, with fans in particular noticing similarities to the Italian’s game.

After his victory over Rublev, John Isner and Sam Querrey have been looking ahead to see who else Fonseca could play with a potential third round Australian Open meeting against Frances Tiafoe looming.

John Isner and Sam Querrey predict who would win between Frances Tiafoe and Joao Fonseca

Following on from Fonseca winning the ATP Next Gen Finals last year, the same event that Tiafoe qualified for in both 2018 and 2019, the Brazilian has gone on a 14 match winning streak.

With hype for the 18-year-old at an all time high, when speaking on their Nothing Major Podcast Isner and Querrey have predicted the winner of a potential match between Fonseca and Tiafoe at the Australian Open.

Despite hoping their compatriot would win the match, both Isner and Querrey have backed Fonseca to continue his breakthrough run in Melbourne.

“I’ll answer. I am going to say Fonseca. I want Frances,” said Querrey, who was followed up with a response by Isner agreeing with him. “I am too [going for Fonseca]. I want Frances too.”

Who are Joao Fonseca and Frances Tiafoe playing in their second round matches at the Australian Open?

Despite Isner and Querrey getting excited about the prospect of a first-time meeting between Fonseca and Tiafoe, both players still have to come through their second round matches.

Tiafoe has already played one five set match in the first round, and now faces someone he has never played before in Fabian Marozsan.

While Fonseca will compete against one of the few players on the main ATP Tour that he has played before, and beaten, in Lorenzo Sonego.

Fonseca played Sonego last year in only his fifth ever main ATP Tour event, beating him in straight sets on the clay of Bucharest.
