As the ATP Tour cries out for someone to break the monotony of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance, Joao Fonseca awaits.

The teenage superstar has been whispered about for a couple of years now, but it only felt like this year that he truly put himself on the map.

After all, there were murmurs of a Brazilian starlet bringing hordes of fans with him wherever he went.

In 2025, those rumours were proven true.

Who will join Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in a new ‘big three’?

Wherever he went, so did the carnival, bringing incredible atmospheres unlike anything tennis had ever seen before.

And yet, despite boasting the prodigious talent to back up such hype, Joao Fonseca’s coach suggests something else has impressed him more about his pupil than his ability to deal with pressure.

Joao Fonseca’s coach praises Brazilian superstar

Speaking to Brazilian outlet Lance, Guilherme Teixeira was naturally effusive in his praise for the 19-year-old.

After all, 2025 marked a breakthrough year for Fonseca, winning his first-ever ATP event in Buenos Aires, before then upgrading to an ATP 500-level title in October.

He continues to go from strength to strength, with an electric, offensive play style that is only sure to gain him more fans.

Teixeira admitted: “I’ve always been struck by his ability to feel part of the environments he plays in; he adapts to new surroundings very quickly, always thinking he can be there, that he belongs there.

“Sometimes, he achieves incredible clarity for his age, especially when facing and acting upon moments. I think that’s one of his great virtues, being very self-assured.”

His coach then offered an insight into Fonseca’s personality, adding: “Joao is a very calm guy, extremely calm. He really likes to take his time to do things; he dislikes rushing.

“He is a super organised guy who likes to know when things start and end, he likes to have everything well-structured.

“He has a good relationship with everyone, although he is very discreet. He always facilitates approaching others, despite his level, he has never shown any arrogance.

“This greatly helps the coexistence within the circuit.”

Ironically, Fonseca has given his thoughts on Alcaraz and Sinner already this year, outlining his hopes and plans for the future.

Could Joao Fonseca unsettle Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance?

Whilst tennis fans unsurprisingly clamour to watch Alcaraz face Sinner whenever the two face off, there is a general consensus that some additional competition could not hurt.

After all, the last eight Grand Slam titles have been shared between just two men, and the last three finals have also been competed exclusively between them.

Who will win the 2026 Australian Open?

Stars like Jack Draper, Ben Shelton and Felix Auger-Aliassime have all been tipped to disrupt this duopoly, but perhaps Fonseca, still so young and malleable, has the best chance of them all.

Especially given how he has instantly taken to life on the ATP Tour, bursting onto the scene and achieving things that most players won’t in their entire careers.

With a forehand that could rival anyone’s on tour, and a mentality that will only see his upward trajectory continue, it would be unwise to bet against Fonseca being the man to turn the ‘New Two’ into a new Big Three.
