Joao Fonseca is enjoying a fantastic season, having burst onto the scene at the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals last December.
Fonseca broke into the top 30 earlier this year, with the Brazilian set to end the year 24th in the ATP rankings.
At just 19 years old, he’s already a two-time champion, claiming titles this season in Buenos Aires and Basel.
Fonseca beat Francisco Cerundolo in the final of the former, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final of the latter.

Further success for the Brazilian was on the cards next month, but Fonseca has decided to withdraw from the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals.
A statement from the event on X read: “Joao Fonseca has withdrawn from the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF as he continues to recover from an injury sustained at the end of the 2025 ATP Tour season. We wish Joao the best in his recovery and in his preparations for the 2026 ATP Tour season.”

It’s certainly a blow for organisers and fans, with the teenager having lifted the trophy at last year’s tournament.
Fonseca defeated American youngster Learner Tien in the final in Jeddah, winning their clash 2–4, 4–3(10–8), 4–0, 4–2.

Fonseca joined elite company when he won the title last year, with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz having also won the event in the past.
The duo have gone on to enjoy simply stunning senior careers, with Fonseca wanting to challenge Alcaraz and Sinner in the near future.

While Fonseca has withdrawn from the Next Gen ATP Finals, his busy 2025 season isn’t exactly over just yet.
The teenager has committed to an exhibition in Miami next month, where he’ll be joined by Alcaraz, Amanda Anisimova and Jessica Pegula.

Fonseca’s presence at the tournament certainly raises questions about his Next Gen withdrawal in Saudi Arabia.
At the same time, however, his absence in Jeddah should also be welcomed as it will give another young player the chance to break through.
