Joao Fonseca’s French Open campaign came to an abrupt end in the third round, following a heavy defeat to Jack Draper.
Fonseca lost to Draper in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2, in what was a dominant performance from the world number five.
The 18-year-old had shown promising signs in the French capital, with a comfortable win over Geneva finalist Hubert Hurkacz and a closely contested triumph over Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
Britain’s Draper proved too much for Fonseca, however, who discussed where he wants his game to be come the end of the season, following his exit from Roland Garros.

Joao Fonseca states his goal for the end of the season
In his post-match press conference, the Brazilian said: “I want to play the big tournaments. Now with my ranking, I can, but I want to play in the main draw of 500s, all of them.
“At the end of the year, my goal is to be a seeded player in Australia; it’s a goal for me.
“We need time, we need good weeks, results, but it’s my personal goal and that’s what I think.
“I’m improving and learning. I’m not feeling bad about this loss today. He’s a great player. I know I didn’t play my best, but now we need to move on and think about the next weeks coming in the grass season.
“It’s just the beginning. We’ll keep learning and practicing.”
Jack Draper’s next opponent at Roland Garros following his win against Joao Fonseca
After his victory over Fonseca, Draper enters the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the second time this season.
His next opponent comes in the form of Alexander Bublik, who defeated Henrique Rocha to book his place in the round of 16.
Draper leads the head-to-head with Bublik 2-0, with the two victories coming on different surfaces.
The Briton’s first victory over the 27-year-old came in 2021 in front of a home crowd on the grass courts of Queen’s Club, where he clinched two tiebreaks to seal the deal.
Their most recent clash was in the semi-final of the Adelaide International on hard court in 2024, where Draper emerged victorious in straight sets.
In their first meeting on clay, a place in the quarter-final of the 2025 French Open is up for grabs.
