Joao Fonseca reached the biggest final of his career at the Swiss Indoors in Basel after defeating Jaume Munar in straight sets.
In a closely contested semifinal bout, Fonseca beat Munar 7-6, 7-5 to become the first Brazilian to make an ATP 500 championship match.
The 19-year-old, who skipped the entirety of the Asian swing, has recorded an impressive start to the indoor hard-court season.
Fonseca came through his first round clash with big server Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and advanced past Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinals following a walkover in round two.

He was 4-1 up in the decisive third set against Shapovalov and was closing in on the win before the Canadian suddenly withdrew from the match.
Now, with Fonseca’s victory over Munar, the young star has just matched one of Roger Federer‘s ATP records.
Joao Fonseca equals Roger Federer’s record in Basel
Fonseca is now among the youngest finalists ever at the Swiss Indoors, ranking fourth since the inception of the tournament.
| Player | Age | Year |
| Mats Wilander | 18 years, 1 month | 1982 |
| Goran Ivanisevic | 19 years, 17 days | 1990 |
| Jim Courier | 19 years, 1 month | 1989 |
| Joao Fonseca | 19 years, 2 months | 2025 |
| Roger Federer | 19 years, 2 months | 2000 |
| Holger Rune | 19 years, 6 months | 2022 |
| John McEnroe | 19 years, 8 months | 1978 |
He achieved the feat at the same age as Federer, older than only three players in the Open Era.
Jim Courier and Goran Ivanisevic made the final in Basel at a slightly younger age, while Mats Wilander reached the title bout in 1982 at 18.
The Swede was seeded second that year, and ultimately lost to the first seed, Yannick Noah, in the final.

Joao Fonseca’s record against his final opponent in Basel
Fonseca’s final opponent at the Swiss Indoors comes in the form of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, whom he has faced just once before at a tour-level event.
Their sole ATP meeting came in the second round of the Cincinnati Open this year, during which the Brazilian found himself a set down after losing a tiebreak in the first.
In the second set, Fonseca was leading 5-4, but Davidovich Fokina was forced to retire due to injury.
Davidovich Fokina will be a tough test for Fonseca, with the Spaniard enjoying a strong campaign in the Swiss city so far.
Both men are seeking to clinch a maiden ATP 500 title, but Davidovich Fokina is looking for his first ATP crown overall.
