Joao Fonseca has withdrawn from the Eastbourne Open a day before he was scheduled to play his opening match.

Fonseca had been drawn against Giles Hussey in the round of 16 of the ATP 250 tournament, which is now underway.

But the Brazilian superstar has been ruled out of the Eastbourne Open with injury, shortly after taking on the Halle Open in Germany.

Fonseca, who played singles and doubles in Halle and reached the final in the latter, has now shared an update about his fitness as Wimbledon approaches.

In a concerning update before the Grand Slam, Fonseca posted on his Instagram story: “After feeling some slight discomfort in my right shoulder, my team and I have decided, as a precaution, not to compete in the Eastbourne tournament.

“The goal is to arrive at Wimbledon in the best possible shape.

“I am very grateful to the tournament organizers for the incredible hospitality.

“Now it’s time to keep putting in the work.

“See you at Wimbledon!”

Fortunately it is just a precautionary measure from the 19-year-old, who is no stranger to injury despite his relatively brief career so far.

British qualifier Hussey will instead continue his fine run at the tournament against Quentin Halys, having just knocked out Matteo Arnaldi.

What is Joao Fonseca’s record at Wimbledon?

Fonseca’s update arrives just before Wimbledon, where qualifying is already underway before the main draw starts later this month.

The Brazilian star made a memorable debut at the All England Club in 2025, when he enjoyed a superb run to the third round.

He beat home favorite Jacob Fearnley in his opening match, becoming the first 18-year-old to reach the second round of Wimbledon since Carlos Alcaraz in 2021.

Fonseca followed that up by defeating American Jenson Brooksby in round two, before his run was ended by Chilean Nicolas Jarry.
