Young Czech tennis player Jiri Lehecka registered the biggest win of his career on Tuesday against the former world number one Rafael Nadal.

The 22-year-old proved too hot to handle for the 22-time Grand Slam winner at the Madrid Open as he came out on top in straight sets, as he secured a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

The result broke the heart of the thousands of Spanish fans sitting in the arena who came hoping to see Nadal book his place in the quarter-final of the tournament.

Lehecka, during the press talk after the match, was asked how he managed to handle the pressure of playing in an arena where a vast majority of the crowd were supporting his opponent.

The backing Nadal got was particularly vociferous towards the end of the match, as the pressure grew on Lehecka. However, he kept his composure well, as he powered his way to success.

Jiri Lehecka reveals how he handled pressure of thousands supporting Rafael Nadal

Despite his calm exterior, the big server admitted that the support was on a scale that he had never experienced before, and he simply couldn’t train for the atmosphere.

“I don’t think that there is any way how to prepare for this because you know some of the moment in the last game of the match which I experienced, there was 13,000 people screaming Rafa, Rafa, shouting for him almost like all the time,” he said.

“[That] is something I have never experienced in my life and I doubt I will experience this kind of thing ever again.

“So for me it was very important just to focus on myself. I kind of do this trick that in my mind [where] I try to create like illusion that they are shouting for me because I mean that’s the only way how to deal with it.

“I mean if you start to think about it and if you start to think about there are 13,000 people, everyone is against you, no one wants you to win this point than you don’t really need to be there on the court because you already lost.”

Jiri Lehecka — one for the future

Lehecka has been around for a while but has not been able to live up to the expectations. His best performance to this date came in the Australian Open in 2023 where he lost to Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-final in straight sets.

The win against a player of Nadal’s caliber might well be the beginning of something special for Lehecka. With that victory, the 22-year-old has now managed to book his place in the quarter-final of an ATP 1000 Masters for the second time in his career.

With the likes of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner already leading the men’s tennis forward after the dominance of Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, it will not be easy for any player to become the best in business.

But Lehecka, with a win against one of the all-time greats, has showcased that he could have what it takes to deliver when the odds are stacked against him.
