Jim Courier says Carlos Alcaraz was making one mistake ‘far too often’ against Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final

Carlos Alcaraz’s chance of a Wimbledon three-peat was denied by a defiant Jannik Sinner in the final.

Alcaraz lost to Sinner over four sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, as the Italian became the first from his country to emerge victorious in singles at the All England Club.

The world number one is now a four-time major champion and needs just one French Open title to complete the career Grand Slam.

Following Sinner‘s maiden Wimbledon triumph, American tennis legend Jim Courier pinpointed where it went wrong for Alcaraz in the final.

On ‘Tennis Channel Live’, Courier said: “Far too often in this match, if you’re an Alcaraz fan, and I am. He was in those rallies where he was exchanging cannon fire with Sinner.

“He wasn’t able to use the slice backhand as much as I had anticipated. You talked about how he didn’t really use the drop shot to great effect.

“He did early in the match, caught Sinner off guard a few times, but then Jannik was on to it. It was played a little too staccato for Carlos. It needed to have a little bit more variation.

“But this surface makes it really difficult to do it. You don’t have to take our word for it, just ask Ben Shelton, who talked about how fast the ball was coming onto his racket.

“It’s difficult when you don’t have as much time, and the last five matches that Jannik has lost to Carlos have been on far slower surfaces.

“That gives Carlos a chance to turn the points around and use all of his options; he just didn’t have much time today.”

Carlos Alcaraz’s undefeated streak in major finals comes to an end

With his loss to Sinner, Alcaraz’s five-match undefeated streak in Grand Slam finals has come to an end in South West London.

Before Sunday, he had won every major championship match he had been in, starting at the US Open in 2022, where he clinched his first Grand Slam title.

He won his first Wimbledon final in 2023 and came out on top after reaching the last stage of Roland Garros the following year.

Alcaraz went back-to-back in London and Paris in 2024 and 2025, respectively, but finally lost a major final to his rival, Sinner, at this year’s championships.
